While our stay in Chiang Mai, Thailand, we visited an elephant sanctuary. This sanctuary contained four female elephants, and all of them were rescued from bad and/or unfortunate situations. It was nice to see all of them happy and thriving.
We were given the opportunity to make the elephants a supplement that helps them to better digest the food they eat and help them go to the bathroom. In a large bowl, we combined salt, banana, a flowery herb that tastes like pepper (it was spicy), and a date like fruit. We grinded it all together into a paste, and then watched as it was fed to the elephants.
On our second day at the sanctuary, we had the opportunity to walk around the land with a guide. We got to see all the elephants in a more natural habitat and watched as they ate, scratched against trees, and even drank/bathed in water.
For another part of our service at the elephant sanctuary, we planted sugar cane and beans for the elephants. I was in charge of digging the holes for all the plants, while other people were in charge of placing the surgar cane stocks and bean seeds into the holes. After we finished burying everything, we watered all the plants and that was the end of our service.
