Special Belongings

We take the theme of belongings as this week's focus, as we look ahead to the 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time. When Jesus is quizzed by the Pharisees about whether or not to pay taxes, his answer is categorical - money is not of God. "Pay Caesar what belong to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God."

We're asking the children this week about their special belongings. We want to know what is precious in their lives. What belongings need their special care and attention? We're hoping to reveal to them a little bit more about how special they are to God and how we can show we are his precious belongings by the way we choose to live our lives.

The Triple Bronze

A very special day in school as we award the first of our new House Points (bronze, silver and gold) for evidence of our school's mission in action: at class level (bonze), school level (silver) and community level (gold). We have three fabulous young men in Year 1 who have been awarded bronze house points (worth 25 tokens!) for their exceptional commitment to completing learning challenges independently.

Theo, Guy and Maxime have been inspirational role models for their class; showing what it means to grow into confident, independent learners. Well done boys!

Fr Thomas' Special Belongings

Yesterday Year 6 had a visit from Father Thomas to talk about the Sacrament of Holy Orders. He told us all about himself and went through the different stages that he experienced, including his time at the seminary. We were also shown the Chasuble and Stole, as well as the Chalice and Paten which he was presented with during the ceremony. We enjoyed sharing this recent experience with him and learned a lot!

Belonging to God

In this week's Witness Worship, Miss Nicholls reveals the life of a local man - Sean Devereaux - who worked as a UNICEF food distributor and Salesian missionary.

Very sadly, Sean was killed in 1993 in Somalia because of the work he was involved in. He truly dedicated his life to Christ in the service of others and demonstrated what it means to belong to God.

Saint Edward's Feast Day

Yesterday, St Edward's class celebrated the feast day of their class patron saint. They had a great morning learning about St Edward the Confessor and his power to heal the sick. The children were busy creating an array of engaging information leaflets about him and doctors' bags full of hints used to help 'heal' people today.

Celebrating St Kenneth

This week also saw the feast of St Kenneth which took place on the 11th October.

5K learned how Saint Kenneth had helped convert the Picts in Ireland to Christianity and linked this with their Anglo-Saxon topic in history.

They learned some Gaelic, enjoyed practising some Irish dancing and also sketched St Kenneth in detail.

Belonging to St Swithun's Class

To round off this week's worship theme, 6S take us on a beautiful journey of belonging. They explore the special objects that we own; the precious belongings that mean so much to us - pets, family heirlooms, baby toys etc. They explore the sacrament of baptism, through which we become named members of God's family - the Church. Finally, they explore the many ways we can see and understand that our lives belong to God and we are called to live for his glory.

Artists in St Luke's

Today 4L celebrated St Luke's Day (the patron saint of art) by taking part in a virtual art lesson with the artist Olaf Falafel. Attached is a photo of some of the abstract art they created, inspired by the work of Henri Mattise. 4L also shared some of their art work and colouring from home.
