Preparing for Christ

As we continue our journey through Advent, we're looking at the theme of preparation in this weekend's Gospel: 2nd Sunday of Advent (Year B). We meet John the Baptist, the man chosen to prepare for Christ, as foretold by the prophet Isaiah.

John is helping us to think about the many different kinds of preparations we can make. Of course, we want the children to see our school looking more festive and our Christmas lights brightening up the community. However, this is not the kind of preparation John is asking of us. He wants us to prepare our hearts, minds and souls for the coming of Christ.

So, we asking children this week to consider how they can start to look more Christmassy on the inside and the outside this week!

Igloo in Action

A huge thanks to all those kind families who donated milk bottles for Nursery's igloo - it looks amazing! The Nursery team have made the most remarkable structure that the children can now enjoy as they prepare for the celebration of Christmas and the change in the winter weather too.

It's been absolutely fascinating to see this structure come together over the last week or so. We've seen how to organise and attach the bottles to make a strong, stable structure.

And, best of all, this igloo won't melt away!

Advent 2020 - OT Stories

Preparing, the OT way...

This Advent, we will be sharing with children the stories of the Old Testament as we prepare for Christ's arrival this Christmas. We will follow God's plan for salvation and hear how each moment from the Old Testament offers us a sign of hope for the coming of the Messiah.

Because our weekly worships are Gospel focused, we don't often get the chance to examine the Old Testament in chronological order, so this Advent gives us a rare opportunity to really understand what the bigger story of the Bible is all about.

Why not head on over to the Surrey Arts YouTube channel to explore music from around the world, introductory lessons to playing a wide range of musical instruments and tours of local artist's studios!

December’s ‘Right of the Month’ and ‘Wellness Warrior Challenge’ is:

Article 23: If you are disabled, either mentally or physically, you have the right to special care and education to help you develop and lead a full life.

During this month we celebrate International Day of Persons with Disabilities on the 3rd December. This is a day to celebrate and acknowledge the experience and capabilities of people with disabilities, and also a chance for people and organisations all over the world to focus on measures to support greater integration and equality for people with disabilities.

One of our role models is Olivia Breen, a paralympic athlete. Here is a short video if you would like to learn a little more about her.

You may like to research someone you think is a great role model for people with physical or mental disabilities and bring this in to show your class teacher.

In the spirit of giving, why not research and donate to a charity that supports people with disabilities. There are many good charities globally such as Mind, Challengers, or perhaps a more local one like Cherry Trees.

Witness Assembly 2nd Advent

Crisis Prepares for Christmas

In Witness Worship this week, Miss Longman introduces us to Bill Shearman - the man who founded Crisis Open Christmas. Bill's work in identifying and supporting the vulnerable and homeless on London's streets paved the way for a national movement that looks to support our neediest neighbours during the festive season.

Thanks to Bill's example, today thousands of volunteers from the across the country give up their time and talents to comfort and support those less fortunate than themselves. What a great way to prepare for a happy and holy Christmas!

Gingerbread

What an exciting week in Year 6! - Designing and making gingerbread structures. The corridor smells wonderful! Children mixed, baked and constructed their designs from scratch, learning a host of new skills along the way. They loved the opportunity to finish their products with a little artistic flair...and I'm certain they tasted pretty good too!

Year 4 Egyptian Day

Freddie to the Rescue!

There were gasps or amazement and admiration in 2E this week as Freddie earned an illusive Golden House Point (worth 100 tokens!) for his remarkable fund raising efforts. Freddie has been working hard, in his own time, to raise over £100 for the Royal National Lifeboat Institute, after learning about their life-saving work and deciding that he could do something to help. Freddie leapt into action, selling sweetie cones to friends and family to raise the cash.

What a life-saver; top man Freddie! Well done.
