Sent by God

As we look ahead to the Third Sunday of Advent (Year B), we're told that John the Baptist was a man, "sent by God" and so we're thinking this week about the special jobs and missions we've been sent on in our lives.

At the heart of our belief about human dignity and purpose lies the understanding that each of us is created with the freedom and capacity to make a difference to the lives of others.

We want our children to be open to the calling God has for their lives, being ready and willing to live out their vocations and respond to God's call, just like John.

Celebrating St Nicholas

Today St Nicholas class celebrated The Feast of St Nicholas (6th December). The children were intrigued when they were asked to leave a shoe outside the classroom when they arrived at school this morning. Just before playtime they were thrilled to discover two gold coins had appeared in their shoe! During the day we learnt that this was how the Christmas stocking originated.

We also learned that St Nicholas was the patron saint of sailors and children and were very excited when two sailors from the Royal Navy in Portsmouth appeared and kindly answered our questions.

As St Nicholas was 'the bearer of gifts', we ended the day by giving a gift of kindness to each other, for example, 'I will let you choose the game tomorrow', 'I will sit next to you at lunchtime.' An enjoyable and memorable day for St Nicholas Class!

God's Gifts to Us

This Advent, we will be sharing with children the stories of the Old Testament as we prepare for Christ's arrival this Christmas. We will follow God's plan for salvation and hear how each moment from the Old Testament offers us a sign of hope for the coming of the Messiah.

Because our weekly worships are Gospel focused, we don't often get the chance to examine the Old Testament in chronological order, so this Advent gives us a rare opportunity to really understand what the bigger story of the Bible is all about.

Sent on a mission

In Witness Worship this week, Miss Green takes a look at all the different problems that can confront us when we start off on a mission. She offers us a healthy reminder that distractions and upsets are all part of the journey and that we should remain firm in our resolve to move forward with the job God has given us to do.

Miss Green introduces us to the remarkable character of Helen Roseveare, a missionary who started out life on a very different path. Thanks to some good friends, she became acquainted with Christ and decided she would devote her live to sharing his love with the world. Helen embarked on a lifelong mission that would touch the lives of thousands of people. She was truly sent by God.
