How are your experiences with technology similar to Shayne's? How are they different?
Have you ever taken on (or thought of taking on) a challenge similar to Shayne's?
Shayne took the challenge presented to him to achieve more balance around technology in his life. This is called this Media Balance.
Media balance is using media in a way that feels healthy and in balance with other life activities (family, friends, school, hobbies, etc.). In today's lesson, we're going to think about ways we can find our own sense of media balance.
Digital Media is content (text, audio, images, video) or devices that allow people to share information, communicate, and collaborate over the internet or computer networks.
Complete part 1 by interviewing a friend or family member and then ask them to interview you (Make a copy of google doc to fill in sections)
Complete Part 1's interview and take notes in My Digital Life worksheet.
When you finish, reflect on the positives and negatives of our digital media use and identify ways to achieve media balance.
How big a role does digital media play in your life (a little, some, a lot)?
What are your favorite and least favorite things to do with digital media?
What are the positive and not so positive aspects of having digital media in your life?
Simile as a figure of speech in which a comparison is made between two different things using the word "like" or "as."
My digital life is like a window onto the world, because it allows me to see all kinds of new things and imagine other possibilities.
My digital life is like a party where I meet a lot of different people, because it feels loud, out of control, and yet fun.
My digital life is as tempting as junk food, because I don't always know when to say no.
Complete Part 2 and 3 on your My Digital Life worksheet.
Create a personal challenge or experiment that you will try for one week to address one or more of the downsides you experience from digital media. Remember, everyone will have different challenges based on their personal experiences!
Unfollowing certain accounts (once you realize it makes you feel envious or sad)
Setting device-free moments in the day
Adding a daily time limit for using a particular app
Plan an activity that doesn't involve a device
