The team incorporated the results from the Customer Survey when it comes to material selection. Based on the survey results, the customers preferred wood and metal as materials instead of plastics. Customers also preferred to spend less money on organizing modules so the team ultimately decided to pick wood as the preferred material, since it is much cheaper than metal and it is easier to manufacture. This point is further explored in our alpha prototype developmental process breakdown.
Out of all different kinds of woods, the team listed three to consider as our material options which can be seen in the table below. This material was selected based on the availability of wood sheets of values 3mm or less. Basswood and birch wood both have a unit price of $2.49 per panel and Balsa wood has a unit price of $2.00 per panel, so the best/cheapest material option would be balsa wood. A design study for balsa is found in Appendix E. The previous design study was rerun using the material properties of these woods and found that 3mm was still the minimum wall thickness.
