The consideration of magnetization direction is most relevant if the magnet is a disc or rectangular prism. The team selected a cube shape for the magnet so that the orientation of the polarity can be adjusted during the design process without needing to repurchase new magnets.
The most suitable magnet for the project are Neodynium magnets, since they have the strongest magnetic force, and the magnets must be able to be incorporated into the design of the walls without sacrificing space.
The key factor for comparison between which size of magnet to use is the pull force, which is the amount of force that is required to separate the magnets in a vertical position. The bench mark pull force we selected is 5 lb, which is the same as the max pull force that ADA has set as a standard for opening doors.
