mEMORIES FROM THE HILLTOP

Elliott, Carol

Interview Summary: Carol came to St. Edward’s from Houston and preferred the closeness and safety the campus provided over UT. While at the university, Carol recalls how much the world around her was changing in the 1960’s. When looking back on this time, she appreciates how the Holy Cross values of the school fostered a safe place for discussing different ideas. One of the most memorable events that occured on campus to her was the Vietnam War Moratorium in 1969, in which faculty and students discussed the war in a civil manner. She is very proud of having gone to St. Edward’s for its progressiveness in civil rights issues, citing the migrant student program as one example.
