DT is a hugely important subject, where you have the opportunity to create objects that can make a real difference to people’s lives and push new designs to the cutting edge. DT applies theory work in a workshop setting to create innovative and creative solutions.
DT can be broken down into three strands; theory knowledge, designing and manufacturing. We will learn theory about famous designers, materials, how products are manufactured & marketed in industry and how the life cycle of a product affects our planet & society. We will learn how to design products for different needs and in different materials. We will also use different drawing methods to allow us to represent our ideas to others and give the required technical details to allow them to be manufactured in industry. We will manufacture products by hand and using CAD/CAM in a variety of materials.
Your final grade will come from the combination of one project and an end of course exam, both are equally weighted at 50%
A problem-solving creative mind set.
This course is a mix of practical and theory based topics, where you will explore the pros and cons of working with a range of different materials. You will be able to make different products and showcase your skills with a final piece of work.
This course covers core technical principles (manufacturing techniques, material sources and environmental concerns), along with designing and making principles (making things and different techniques to make this work).
You will complete a non-examined assessment, worth 50% of your grade, and sit a theory based exam which covers core technical principles.
DT is about preparing and developing your skills to you can apply those in a range of different circumstances, from engineering, science, fashion, product design or home DIY skills.
Many students go on to study different design or engineering disciplines.
What you learn in DT will serve you for the rest of your life.
