Performing Arts - BTEC

Examination Board: Pearson

WHY SHOULD STUDENTS CHOOSE BTEC drama?

The Performing Arts BTEC is assessed with performance-based tasks and assignments, rather than written exams. So, there is no final written exam at the end on the year 11.

There is plenty of content to interest and engage all students interested in performing arts. There is clear progression onto Level 3 study for students who want to explore performing arts further.  The grading across both Level 1 and Level 2, are the equivalent to the new GCSE grades.

You do not have to perform, you can choose the production pathway.

WHAT WILL STUDENTS NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS COURSE?

To be successful, students will need to be able to work with others, as part of a creative team. This may be in a supportive role, such as an actor or designer, or as leading role, such as director or stage manager. An interest in theatre, plays, performance and stage design is useful. Previous acting experience is not required. You will need to critically assess your own work, as well as the work of others.

You will need to be organised as you are expected to keep a log and journal throughout the BTEC to go towards your assessments.

SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS

This course is suitable for students of all ability levels. Students with aspirations to gain a Distinction expect to undertake acting and design projects that will challenge them.

There will be workshops and intervention available throughout the year.

You will explore a range of different theatrical styles and practitioners and will need to show a sophisticated understanding of the impact of their actions/decisions on the performance group and audience.

You do not have to perform, you can choose the production pathway, meaning you can be assessed on your creative and directing skills rather than performance.

Course DEscription

The course is made up of three components: two that are internally assessed and one that’s externally assessed.

There is a three-block structure, explore, develop and apply.

This has been developed to allow students to build on and embed knowledge. Allowing you to grow in confidence and then put into practice what you have learned.

The assessment structure is also designed so that you can build on what you learn in lessons and workshops, and develop your skills as you move through the course.
