Cupang’s name was derived from the name of a plant, kupang. A tall tree that grows to be 30 meters in height. This tree produces a fruit in which the seeds would be boiled then eaten. Cupang is dubbed the “Most Blessed Barangay in the City of Muntinlupa”. Through the development activities that have occurred from fishing and farming, the barangay now hosts some 50 major industries and 11 first class subdivisions.

The Banahayan Festival is a yearly thanksgiving feast in honor of the patron Impong Kulas. It is one of the most anticipated and most visited festivals in Muntinlupa. This festival is held annually on September 10th, in order to bring honor and gratitude to the patron Impong Kulas, for the honor he brought barangays like Cupang, and Buli.
In honor of the saint Nicolas De Tolentino, a saint who served as an advocate for the souls in purgatory, has been given a feast day on September 10th. On feast days, saints such as Nicolas are given special prayers, mentions, and a scripture reading.
