Before digging deeper into this website, it is important we know what exactly are barangays. In dictionary’s terms, according to Oxford’s Lexico, a barangay is a term coined in the Philippines that is defined as a small district that forms the most local level of government. The word is derived from the term balangay. Balangays are sailboats that brought Malay settlers to the Philippines. These boats carried many different families. The leader of these families, who was also the master of the boat, also became the leader of the established village of their family. They were the datu of each barangay, or in other terms, they were basically the captain. If you ask almost anyone living in the Philippines, they would be familiar with the term barangay.
Barangays used to consist of 30 to 100 families, but now they can exceed tens of thousands. Each barangay is still separated from one another to this day, and this website aims to educate our audience about the 9 barangays in Muntinlupa City. As you scroll through our different tabs, you’ll discover historical landmarks, demographic profiles, a brief history, and special events.
