What is Mindfulness? Why should I try it?
Mindfulness is defined as “a moment-to-moment awareness of one’s experience without judgment” (APA, 2012). Have you ever heard the phrase - being in the moment? That’s mindfulness! You are completely focused on what is currently happening, what you are currently experiencing.
There are physical practices that focus on mindfulness such as yoga and tai chi, to name two. And then there are the meditative mindfulness practices. These types of mental awareness practices focus more on bringing your attention and focus into the here and now.
The more you practice these skills, the easier they come to you when you are stressed, need to focus or calm down, etc. Everyone can become more mindful just by practicing! And it really only takes minutes to do - you can practice mindfulness for any amount of time.
