Monday 25 August
Dear families,
What a fantastic time staff and students had celebrating Book Week and its theme, "Book an Adventure"! It was a week filled with imagination and discovery that the students fully embraced. The dress-up day was a major highlight. We were amazed by the students' creativity, as they transformed into everything from classic book characters to modern-day superheroes. The costumes brought so many stories to life, and the parade was a joyful celebration of reading. A special visit from a local author was another standout moment. They shared their creative process and inspired our students to think about writing their own stories. Thanks to all the parents and staff who helped make this a week to remember for our students!
Please be sure to click on the Year Level Highlights Tab above for more captured moments from each year level.
Child Safety- Commitment to the child safe standards.
With national child protection week approaching in September in may be a good time in Term 3 to address how here at St.OPPS we address the child safe standards in practice. Each fortnight I will address two of the standards and provide examples of how we as a school promote a culture of child safety. to ensuring our community is committed to the wellbeing and safety of all children.
Child Safe Standard 5 – Recognise the diverse backgrounds, needs and circumstances of students. Some examples of how this standard is enacted in our school include:
Check in with vulnerable students and their families to confirm their needs are being met. This can occur at pick-up or drop-off, at parent–teacher interviews or through informal discussions.
Engage genuinely with students. Find out what matters to them, what they know and don’t know about safety, and what they need to be safe and feel safe all the time.
Validate students’ feelings.
Offer buddying and mentoring for students.
Child Safe Standard 6 – Ensure that people working with children and young people are suitable and supported to reflect child safety and wellbeing values in practice. Some examples of how this standard is enacted in our school include:
Ensure recruitment advertisements for staff in child-connected work contain:
the job’s requirements, including expected knowledge of child development appropriate to the role
an outline of duties and responsibilities regarding child safety and wellbeing
essential or relevant qualifications, experience and attributes in relation to child safety and wellbeing
a statement about the school’s commitment to child safe practices and zero tolerance for abuse.
Provide all job applicants with the school’s Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy, Child Safety Code of Conduct and links to child safety resources.
