Tuesday 10 June
Dear Families,
Last Thursday marked World Environment Day, a significant occasion on our national calendar that encourages us to reflect on how we care for the Earth and take action to protect it for future generations. At St Oliver’s, World Environment Day is an ideal opportunity to revisit our commitment to caring for our planet. Through our Units of Inquiry, students explore sustainability priorities, deepen their understanding of ecological responsibility, and learn what it means to care for our common home. These learning experiences encourage students to think critically about the impact of human activity and the importance of respectful, sustainable living. World Environment Day serves as a powerful reminder of the important role each of us plays in protecting the Earth and nurturing a deep appreciation for the natural world.
Celebration of Learning– Literacy Focus
We warmly invite you to our Term 2 Celebration of Learning on Wednesday 18 June from 9:00–10:45am. This session will showcase the evidence-based practices we have been implementing to enhance our students’ reading skills – including fluency pairs, daily review, and read along with your child and view some of their work. Come and sit with your child as they share their learning and talk you through some of the work they are most proud of. We look forward to seeing you there!
School Closure- Professional learning day for teachers:
Our upcoming school closure day will take place on Thursday 19 June. On this day, all staff – including administration, Learning Support Officers, teaching, and leadership staff – will engage in a whole-school professional learning session focused on Team Teach training.
Team Teach is an accredited training framework that aims to strengthen staff capabilities in behaviour support while promoting a safe, inclusive, and cohesive school environment. It emphasises practical, preventative strategies and provides a respectful and structured approach to responding to incidents.
The training will equip staff with:
Practical strategies to support positive student behaviour
Techniques for de-escalation and risk reduction
Restorative practices to follow incidents
An understanding of relevant legislation and MACS policy expectations
Semester One Reporting Update
Our teachers are currently in the thick of the Semester One assessment and reporting process. This involves sitting alongside students in one-on-one interviews in Literacy and Numeracy, completing end-of-unit tests, and gathering observational data on each child’s performance, effort, and behaviour in the classroom. It’s a thorough and thoughtful process, and at St Oliver’s, we’re so fortunate to work with such a beautiful bunch of children- it truly is a joy as principal to read each of their reports and notice their areas of growth and improvement.
Semester One Reports will go live on Compass on Monday, 30 June from 4:30pm. These reports will be shared by our Deputy Principal – Learning Excellence, Sara Belante, and will provide valuable insights into your child’s learning journey so far this year.
Understanding the Changes to Maths Reporting in Semester Reports
As mentioned at our Curriculum Night in April, we are now sharing these changes in our newsletter so all families are well informed. From 2025, all Victorian schools are required to adopt the updated Mathematics 2.0 curriculum, which also brings new ways of reporting on your child’s learning.
What’s Changing?
One Overall Maths Score- In the past, your child received separate scores for each area of Mathematics (such as Number, Measurement, and Statistics). Now, schools will provide just one overall score in Maths based on your child’s overall achievement.
A Holistic Teacher Judgement
This score comes from the teacher’s professional judgement, which takes into account everything your child has shown they understand and can do across the Maths curriculum.
New Focus on Number
The updated curriculum places a much stronger emphasis on Number. This may mean your child’s result in Maths looks different to previous years, especially if they are still developing their number skills. This will be explained further through our Individualised Progression Table, which helps give a clearer picture of your child’s growth.
Achievement Only (Not Progress Yet)
The new reports will show your child’s level of achievement at this point in time. The new curriculum doesn’t yet require us to show progress (e.g. from the start to the end of the year), but that will come later.
We know changes like this can raise questions. Please feel free to reach out if you’d like to discuss your child’s progress. Our goal is always to communicate clearly and support every learner’s growth.
More information and further updates will be shared with you by our Deputy Principal: Mathematics Lead, Cecilia Garden, as we continue to implement these changes throughout the year.
Assembly (This week)
A reminder to all families that our whole-school assembly will take place this Friday at 2:50pm. This week, we will be commemorating World Environment Day, an important occasion on our nation’s calendar that invites us to reflect on our shared responsibility to care for our planet. We warmly invite you to join us in prayer and celebration, as we acknowledge the many achievements of our students and come together as a community committed to stewardship, learning, and growth. We hope to see you there!
Have a great week.
