Pre-Health / Pre-Law

SLU 101 PARTICIPATION:

The Pre-Health and Pre-Law (PHPL) office will offer three optional WED zoom sessions for incoming Medical Scholars.

Dates: June 5, 12 and 26, 2024 at 4pm.

PHPL will not hold similar sessions for pre-health or pre-law students due to low participation during past years. PHPL will have a table at the SLU 101 fair. Please, encourage students to stop by with questions or just to introduce themselves.

Zoom links will be emailed to students by PHPL.

Each session will be led by Eva, Cole, or Tristan and possibly 1-2 Pre-Health ambassadors present. (depends on their summer availability)

FRESHMAN COURSEWORK:

Medical Scholars (no change from last year):

COURSE REQUIREMENTS for FALL 2024 (min 14 credits for letter grade each semester; total for freshman year 30 credits min).

1. BIOL 1240 and 1245 lab

2. CHEM 1110 and 1115 lab

3. CP1 (CORE 1500) special sections for Medical Scholars: all students will be pre-registered; this course is required. All sections will be coordinated with respect to their content.

All the CP1 for Medical Scholars are scheduled on Monday afternoon (3:10 - 5:00pm) in Fall 2024.

Summer Classes and Med Scholars

Medical Scholars are required to take all required math and science courses at SLU in person during regular academic semesters (fall and spring only). No required science and math classes may be taken in other schools even if they are not used for a credit at SLU. This includes any summer coursework prior to coming to SLU.

Medical Scholars can take humanities and/or social sciences during summer at SLU or other schools.

Medical Scholars cannot repeat any coursework that they already earned a credit for (including AP credit). (There are exceptions such as BIOL, CHEM).

Medical Scholars can take max 20 credit hours online during their four years at SLU; none of that can be in math and/or science.

TRADITIONAL PRE-HEALTH students:

FRESHMAN COURSEWORK for Traditional Pre-Health Students:

Recommendation to take the same BIOL and CHEM coursework as Medical Scholars and a minimum of 14 standard letter-graded credits. (Total for the freshman year: 30 credits)

1. BIOL 1240 and 1245 lab

2. CHEM 1110 and 1115 lab

Recommended for Spring 2025: PPHS 1020 Introduction to Health Professions (=upgraded version of PPHS 1000 that is no longer offered)

OPPORTUNITY FOR FIRST YEAR SLU STUDENTS TO ENTER MEDICAL SCHOLAR PROGRAM AFTER THEIR FRESHMAN YEAR:

Students can apply to enter Medical Scholar program at the end of their freshman year if they meet the same requirements as freshman Medical Scholars (the same min GPA (3.65) and complete the same course requirements as Medical Scholars.

Changes in Medical Scholar timeline:

Starting with the cohort of incoming Medical Scholars in Fall 2024, students will go through the SLU SOM admission process at the end of their Junior year (change from current end of Sophomore year).

SLU SOM changed their minimum requirements for GPA and MCAT. Please, refer to the table below of the min requirements for each cohort (entering year 2021-2024)

LAW SCHOLARS & Traditional PRE-LAW students

Law Scholars should take PLS 1000 in Fall 2024, if possible. However, it can also be taken in Spring 2025 if it fits their schedule better (although this means that they will be isolated from the rest of the cohort).

PHPL will pre-register all incoming Law Scholars in PLS 1000 for the Fall 2024. Please, try not to drop students if possible.

There will be no CP1 for any pre-law students.
