From Canvas:
Madrid students admitted to the ESL Bridge program should NOT take this test. These students will take a different test upon arrival in Madrid.
Your score is important and you may take this test only once!
Ensure you have sufficient time and space to complete the test to your best ability.
The scores range from 0-6. Score of 0-3 places into ENGL/EAP 1500, 4-6 places into ENGL/EAP 1900.
Exams are graded manually, beginning the week of June 9, 2025.
Scores will be available in Canvas.
This test is timed.
You have 60 minutes to complete the test.
If you are currently eligible for academic accommodations contact SLU's Center for Accessibility and Disability Resources at accessibility_disability@slu.edu regarding placement testing accommodations.
It is important to arrange accommodations BEFORE taking the first attempt of a placement test.
Do not open the test unless you are ready to complete it. You can only open it once. Once you open it, you have 60 minutes to complete it.
College Credit (most transfer students and some freshmen meet this criteria)
Not sure if your college credit can count for placement? Take this short survey.
Freshmen
SLU 1818 credit: Students who have earned credit for ENGL1500 or ENGL1900 through SLU’s 1818 Program do not need to take the Placement Test. 2000 level literature courses cannot be used for placement since they focus on literature rather than writing composition.
Non-SLU and AP/IB credit cannot substitute for the placement test. Placement test results are necessary for advising and registration, which often occur before these scores/transcripts are available. Once transcripts are received and evaluated, credit will be posted per University policy, and initial placement may be adjusted.
Transfer Students
Students who have already completed a course equivalent to ENGL 1500 or ENGL 1900 at an accredited college or university in the United States (Determine Course Equivalencies) do not need to take the placement test. The course must be complete with a grade of C or better and posted on an official transcript that has already been sent to SLU – it cannot be a current, in-progress course.
