Students in these learning communities share a common purpose where coursework, service, and social activities are designed to enhance the experience of living on campus and promote a learning lifestyle.
Students applied to be part of a Learning Community through the housing portal. The Learning Community Team places students in Learning Community Associated courses prior to SLU 101. Students’ majors have been reviewed and students are placed in the appropriate Learning Community courses.
Live in the assigned residence hall
Take 1-2 required courses with your community
Be admitted into the correct college, major, or program if applicable
Students involved in the Learning Community program have a more engaging experience when associated courses are filled to capacity. The Learning Community Program greatly appreciates all the hard work advisors do to help us achieve this goal.
There are four general reasons that an LC student may be excused from one of their Learning Community courses:
The student has prior credit; either Advanced Placement credit or Transfer credit.
The student has not met a pre-requisite for the LC course.
The LC course conflicts with a requirement for their major; including a course sequence issue. (Note: All other LC course options and scheduling options must be exhausted before an exemption is given to the student).
The student has a status conflict including being a Pres-Scholar or Med-Scholar, is a student-athlete; in the Billiken Success Program; or in the INTO program, etc.
If the student meets one of the above criteria, the advisor should drop the LC class. Students cannot drop the LC class on their own.
Students must remain in at least one LC course to be eligible. If students are not able to take one LC course, they will need to drop the learning community.
Note: Learning Communities are connected to students’ housing assignment. Any changes to a student’s LC choice will affect their housing placement. However, if a student changes their major after move-in, their housing assignment will not change.
Student wants to drop the LC:
If they applied between February 1 and May 1st, they have missed the window for dropping the LC
If they applied after May 1, they have three calendar days after they have received their admit letter to email lc@slu.edu to drop the LC.
Student wants to add LC:
Students must submit their housing contract and LC contract listing their LC preferences by June 30th
If they are attending SLU 101, they speak with housing at the Resource Fair on Day 2.
Students will not have the ability to edit their LC if they have already been admitted to an LC.
Any LC questions should be directed to the Resource Fair on Day 2.
We admit students on a rolling basis until the LC is full, or June 30.
Students admitted after May 1 have three calendar days to drop the learning community; they will not have the ability to drop one LC and add another.
