Dear SPARTAN Family,
My name is Francisco Albertorio, proud principal of Springfield Lyceum College Preparatory, previously known as Chestnut Academy. Despite my background as a former ELA teacher, it feels like language itself is an inadequate match for this moment. There are simply no words precise enough, or profound enough, to express how much we are wanting to connect with you all.
This Tuesday, September 15th, we will begin classes 100% online. Your teachers cannot wait to get to welcome you for the first time! We are so excited to show you that, even from afar, the SPARTAN community will remain joyful and tight-knit, while classes be fun, rigorous, and rewarding. It might look and feel a little different at first, but we promise you this: we will care for you with every fiber of our being, and we will always, always, be transparent with you. We know this school year will be difficult at times. There will be challenges we can predict and prepare for, and there will be challenges that surprise us. As we navigate the situation together, and feel the many emotions that come with these unprecedented times, please remember: you are never alone. There are around 430 families that are reading this letter right now, too. We may be physically-distanced, but we are connected as SPARTANS.
Over the past two months, you may have asked questions for which there were no clear answers. “When will all of this be over? When will we be able to go back to school? What happened to Chestnut Academy? Who or what is Lyceum College Prep?” We understand the sense of uncertainty can feel heavy, all-consuming, and exhausting. But instead we should stand strong together not saying, “I don’t know” instead we should say, “I don’t know...yet.” We don’t know yet how exactly this year will play out, but we do know that we’re in it together, and for that I am so grateful.
Eventually, this pandemic will end. Scientists will create a vaccine, the masks we have worn for one hundred and some days will get tucked away somewhere and forgotten, and this terrible virus will mutate from menace to memory. But if there is one thing I have learned from these last five months, it is this: the city of Springfield needs you, more than ever before. We need a generation that embraces empathy, savors complexity, and leads with compassion. We need a generation to do well but also to do good. Our SPARTAN scholars are the leaders of tomorrow and we count on you to build a more just world.
Scholars, please enjoy your remaining few weeks of vacation; play, listen to music, laugh, read...and when you’re done reading, maybe read a little bit more. SPARTANS: We believe in you, we are so proud of you, and we cannot wait to meet you soon.

Querida Familia ESPARTANA,
Mi nombre es Francisco Albertorio, orgulloso director de la Preparatoria Springfield Lyceum, antes conocida como Academia Chestnut. A pesar de mi experiencia como profesor de ELA, siento que el lenguaje en sí mismo no es adecuado para este momento. Simplemente no hay palabras lo suficientemente precisas, o profundas, para expresar lo mucho que queremos conectar con todos ustedes.
Este martes 15 de septiembre, comenzaremos las clases 100% en línea. ¡Sus profesores no pueden esperar para darles la bienvenida por primera vez! Estamos muy emocionados de mostrarles que, incluso desde lejos, la comunidad ESPARTANA seguirá siendo alegre y unida mientras las clases son divertidas, rigurosas y gratificantes. Puede que parezca y se sienta un poco diferente al principio, pero les prometemos esto: les cuidaremos con cada fibra de nuestro ser, y siempre, siempre, seremos transparentes con ustedes. Sabemos que este año escolar será a veces difícil. Habrá desafíos que podemos predecir y preparar, y habrá desafíos que nos sorprenderán. Mientras navegamos juntos por la situación, y sentimos las muchas emociones que vienen con estos tiempos sin precedentes, por favor recuerden: no están solos. Hay alrededor de 430 familias que están leyendo esta carta también en este momento. Podemos estar físicamente distanciados, pero estamos conectados como ESPARTANOS.
En los últimos dos meses, puede que hayan hecho preguntas para las que no había respuestas claras. "¿Cuándo terminará todo esto? ¿Cuándo podremos volver a la escuela? ¿Qué pasó con la Academia Chestnut? o ¿Quién o qué es Lyceum College Prep?" Entendemos que la sensación de incertidumbre puede sentirse pesada, consumidora y agotadora. Pero en lugar de eso debemos permanecer fuertes juntos no diciendo, "No lo sé" sino que debemos decir, "No lo sé... todavía". No sabemos todavía cómo será exactamente este año, pero sabemos que estamos juntos en esto, y por eso estoy muy agradecido.
Eventualmente, esta pandemia terminará. Los científicos crearán una vacuna, las máscaras que hemos usado durante cien y algunos días se guardarán en algún lugar y se olvidarán, y este terrible virus mutará de amenaza a recuerdo. Pero si hay algo que he aprendido de estos últimos cinco meses, es esto: la ciudad de Springfield te necesita, más que nunca antes. Necesitamos una generación que abrace la empatía, saboree la complejidad y lidere con compasión. Necesitamos una generación que no solo haga el bien, pero que también haga cosas buenas. Nuestros eruditos ESPARTANOS son los líderes del mañana y contamos con ustedes para construir un mundo más justo.
Escolares, por favor disfruten de las semanas que les quedan de vacaciones; jueguen, escuchen música, rían, lean... y cuando terminen de leer, tal vez, lean un poco más. Creemos en ustedes, estamos muy orgullosos de ustedes y no podemos esperar a conocerlos pronto.
