Parent & Student Handbook Sign-off DUE Friday, August 29th 2025.
With the advances in technology and the skills that are required of our students to excel in the new workforce created by technological advances, Juan Diego Catholic High School has implemented a philosophy of education called online blended learning. Online Blended Learning combines classroom instruction with online content and technology to provide students with the best of both learning experiences. Furthermore, Juan Diego Catholic High school participates in the state funded State Online Education Program (SOEP). This program allows students to participate in Online Blended Learning at Juan Diego Catholic High School as a typical student but with access to rigorous and high quality online content. Juan Diego uses the SOEP to advance its commitment to online blended learning. Most other schools used the SOEP only for pure online learning whereby the student interacted with a course electronically with no teacher or classroom learning involved. At Juan Diego Catholic High School, we reject the online only model and provide students a dynamic learning environment that combines the best of brick-and-mortar with the best of online teaching and pedagogy.
Juan Diego Catholic High School partners with Arizona State University Prep Digital (ASUPD), Canyons School District, and the Utah State Board of Education. We partner with Arizona State University Prep Digital (ASUPD) to enhance blended online learning by using the resources of a major university to help us develop the high school courses. ASUPD helped us with online learning resources to aid our curriculum and teacher development. This partnership also permitted our students to take ASU's online college courses.
In many ways, these blended-learning online classes will look and feel like other classes offered at Juan Diego. The key difference in this approach is that students have 24-hour virtual access to the learning materials (handouts, presentations, quizzes, test-preps, etc) with faculty present (in the classroom and online) to develop, guide, and provide a digital dialog with students as they progress through the semester. There is no cost for the student to participate in this program.
For any student enrolled in one or more of these courses, the following will be shared with our partners: Student name, grade level, DOB, student ethnicity, address, home and parent cell phone number(s), student and parent email address, the district of residence, and the student’s final grades.
When your student participates in courses that are blended they will be enrolled in SEATS. SEATS stands for "Student Enrollment and Tracking System" This is the system that the Utah State Board of Education uses when enrolling your student in the State Online Education Program (SOEP) at Juan Diego Catholic High School. There will be emails that come from SEATS indicating the course was through one of our two partners:
Canyons School District
ASUPD
In most instances, this email is purely informational.
If you receive an email notification about a "denied enrollment due to a duplicate request", my team and I handle those on the administrative side. Your student will still take their classes as normal at Juan Diego and they will still receive credit towards graduation as long as they pass the class.
If you receive an email notification about "receiving an Incomplete for Failing grade" then your student will be contacted by their classroom teacher about what they need to do to make up the credit for a passing grade. They will still take their classes at Juan Diego as normal and will still receive credit towards graduation as long as they pass the class.
If you receive an email notification about "enrollment being closed" this just means that SEATS has closed the enrollment due to an Incomplete or Failing grade. Your student will still be allowed to make up their credit and should they complete the remediation work determined by their classroom teacher, my team and I will send that grade change to the state and your student will receive an update from SEATS. Your student will still take their current classes as normal and should they make up the remedial work will still be able to count that credit toward graduation.
In all circumstances, your student will still continue their current course load and will still receive credit toward graduation as long as they pass the class or they complete the makeup work necessary for remediation.
Enrollments in these Online Blended Learning courses will be at the beginning of the summer term, school year, and second semester. Online Blended Learning semester courses are worth .5 credits and must be completed within eight (8) months of the course start date. Online Blended Learning full-year courses are worth 1.0 credits and must be completed within (16) months after the start date.
NOTE: For practical purposes, Juan Diego students will complete both semester and full-year courses in alignment with Juan Diego designated terms and dates (summer, semester, and year-end.)
WITHDRAWAL: Students who wish to drop an online course must withdraw within 20 days of registration. Students who either withdraw from or change these online classes have the option of completing the course within a specified time. Please note, we understand and do not expect your student to complete the course work from the class they are withdrawing from, but we are required by law to inform you that they have that option should they choose to do so.Students who withdraw from a year-long course will have a full year from the registration date to complete their coursework and receive credit. Semester long courses will have a time period of six months from the registration date to complete the coursework.
PARENT/GUARDIAN and student(s) agree that any change in registration affecting enrollment/participation in the online course must be communicated to JDCHS directly and without delay. All terms in this form are subject to revision or modification by Juan Diego Catholic High School and aforementioned partners at any time without specific notice. Parents/Guardians also understand that the student and parent/guardian email address(es) will be used by the regular classroom teacher and by our SOEP partners.
Students will be expected to participate fully in all their JDCHS courses. This includes but is not limited to: logging into canvas every day, complete coursework required by their teachers, and adhering to the JDCHS attendance policies.
A criterion for partnership within the SOEP program is that we obtain both student and parental permission to teach using blended learning/online methods for those courses that are designated as online blended learning courses. Your electronic signature of the JDCHS Parent/Student Handbook gives JDCHS authorization to participate in the Online Blended Learning program.
Your electronic signature of the JDCHS Parent/Student Handbook authorizes your student to participate in Blended Learning through JDCHS and its faculty.
