Apple regularly releases iOS (Apple's operating system) updates that directly change and impact the way your iPad works.
This is the last update of iOS18 that has the look and feel that you are familiar with.
Currently, there is a bug when attempting to AirPlay (share your screen) to an Apple TV if you have an iPad in any version of iOS 18.6.
If you have 18.6, update to 18.7 as it is resolved in that upgrade.
If you have 18.5 or previous versions, stay on that iOS you have until Winter Break.
We recommend upgrading to iOS 26 after the Fall Semester is over, that way you have time to get used to the new look and feel.
Find more information about the latest iOS on the Apple's iOS 26 website.

Apple has a User Guide on What's new in iPadOS 26. The biggest changes are:
App Windows and the new way to layout multiple apps at once.
Customization in the Files app and a new Preview app for your documents.
Change your home screen apps and widgets like never before!
Major updates are usually deferred by OIT for 90 days. After that, they are made available as an optional upgrade. Mid-year updates are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and then installed or deferred by OIT. Major security updates are usually updated automatically by OIT. Bugs or compatibility issues will cause mid-year updates to be deferred. Apple faculty fellows, CITE, and OIT collaborate on whether or not to release an update.

OIT tests iOS releases before allowing University devices to update, as such you may see an update available on a non-University-owned device, but not on your University iPad.
