Professor Dlawer Ala’ Aldeen (MBChB, DTM&H, MSc, PhD, MRCPath)

I am a medical graduate, specialised in Clinical Microbiology. My main task in my job is to treat patients with infection, carry out research and teach undergraduate (medical) and postgraduate (MSc and PhD) students. I have had a long-standing research interest in the study of bacterial infections. My main focus is to understand the molecular basis of human-bacterial interaction with the aim of developing vaccines and novel therapeutic agents against bacteria, particularly the deadly Neisseria meningitides, which is a major causative agent of meningitis and septicaemia. With members of my research group (Molecular bacteriology and Immunology Group) we have invented several vaccines against N. meningitides and discovered several bacterial genes that are considered virulence factors and vaccine targets. We have also studied the population genetics of this bacterium and more recently, we have focused on the human genetic response to infection. My research group and I are also interested in the study of Campylobacter jejuni (main cause of food poisoning and gastroenteritis) and staphylococcus aureus (major cause of sepsis in the hospital and the community).
