Sexuality

Sexuality is a term that describes the entire realm of our sexual selves.  We all have sexuality, just like we all have emotions and we all have physical bodies.

What Is LGBT?

You may see the letters "LGBT" or "2SLGBTQIA+" used to describe sexual orientation and/or sexual identity. This abbreviation stands for "lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender" (or "two-spirited, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual, plus").

Do People Choose Our Sexual Orientation (To Whom We Are Attracted) ?

Most medical and other experts believe that, in general, sexual orientation is not something that a person voluntarily chooses. Instead, sexual orientation is just a natural part of who a person is.

There's nothing wrong about being 2SLGBTQIA+.  Still, not everyone believes that. These kinds of judgemental beliefs can make life extremely difficult for 2SLGBTQIA+ teens.  It is especially hard for young people when they do not have the support of their families.  Rates of mental health issues due to different forms of victimization and rates of suicide are much higher for 2SLGBITQIA+ youth than for other youth.

Should I Be Concerned About My Child's Sexual Life?

Parents should be interested in all parts of our children's lives.  When our children are young, we can begin building those trusting relationships with our kids so that they will feel free to talk with us about anything.  When our children know that they will not be judged, it will be easier for them to ask us questions.  As our children become teenagers, it is more important than ever that we listen to the details of their lives, including their sexual decision making.  If it isn't comfortable for you to talk with your adolescent about sexual subjects, consider sharing some of the resources below.  You can talk about what both of you have read.

The Woburn Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) meets every Wednesday at Lunch in Room #134.
