Welcome to Wilmette Cub Scout Pack 1 FAQ
What is the Pack?
The pack is the combined group of individual grade-level dens. The majority of our scouts attend McKenzie Elementary and St. Joseph School. However, youth from anywhere are welcome to join.
What do Cub Scouts do?
We offer many fun and engaging activities all year round with three primary goals: promoting character building, good citizenship, and physical fitness and healthy living.
How much does it cost?
Yearly dues are currently $125 and we run a popcorn fundraiser in the fall. Some families opt out of the fundraiser and pay an additional $180. Your dues include a subscription to Boy’s Life Magazine, national registration dues, a handbook, 4 starter badges, a Pack t-shirt, a Pinewood Derby car kit and materials for all meetings and activities. Your dues check (along with funds raised in the popcorn sale) funds all Pack campouts, the Museum overnight, the trip to Splash Landings, and any other Pack outings.
Do I need a uniform?
The pack provides a yellow t-shirt and cub scout book. The scout should purchase their own blue uniform, neckerchief and slide. Belts, pants, vests, and hats are all optional.
How often does the Pack meet?
You can anticipate approximately 1 pack event a month, and 1 to 2 den meetings a month. Pack events are large events, such as the pinewood derby, museum overnight, fall campout, and awards ceremonies. Den meetings are small meetings, focused on completing advancement requirements and diving deeper into the primary goals of scouting. During the summer we offer a program of pack events focused on enjoying the outdoors, including bike rides, hikes and canoeing. We also run a Hiking Club, which includes monthly hikes at local forest preserves and nature centers.
How often do I need to attend?
There is no minimum number of meetings or events that must be attended, scouts attend when they can. Missed advancement requirements can generally be completed at home. However, scouting is a group activity and scouts who regularly attend will get the most out of our program.
What is Scoutbook?
Scoutbook is an organization wide tool that we use to schedule and promote events and meetings, track RSVPs and individual scout’s advancement progress, and communicate with our members.
I forgot to RSVP for an event on Scoutbook, can I still attend?
Yes! In only a few specific cases, such as the museum overnight, will we require exact headcounts and pre-registration. However, when possible, please do RSVP, as it helps us plan our meetings.
Can my friend or sibling attend a Cub Scout event?
Yes! Cub scouts is a family program and siblings and parents are encouraged to participate. Please bring friends as this is the best way to recruit new members to join in the fun.
As a parent, do I need to attend events with my scout?
For lion and tiger scouts (kindergarten and first grade) parental attendance is required. For older scouts, please discuss with your den leader. Parental involvement is always encouraged and welcome.
How else can I get involved?
All the leaders of Pack 1 are parent volunteers and we can always use more help. No experience required. Volunteer your time and skills and we will find a place for you to contribute.
