Registration is now open for Cub Scout summer camps and since we have so many Scouts who are new to the Pack this year I thought I'd give a brief overview of the camping options. When you are ready to register for camp visit the Council Cub Scout Summer Camp page and scroll down to the appropriate camp session.
Twilight Camp
This is the most convenient camp option for our boys because it is held in Crow Island Woods in Winnetka. It runs for three afternoons, June 5th-7th from 3:30-8:30pm. Last year almost half of the Pack attended Twilight Camp along with over 100 boys from other Packs in the area. This camp usually fills up so if you are interested you should go ahead and sign up. Please note that although the camp is run by the Council we do have to send a certain number of adults from our Pack to help out and to maintain the appropriate boy to adult ratio. So when you sign up for the camp please look ahead at your calendar and think about volunteering to help with a shift one afternoon (we will send out a volunteer signup list in May so you can choose your 3 hour shift then). This really is a fun experience-the boys get to try archery, launch rockets, and much more! On Friday the 7th there will be a picnic for the campers and their families. Russell has been to Twilight Camp three times and will probably do it again this year. Twilight Camp is also open to incoming Tigers (so, boys who are currently in kindergarten can attend Twilight Camp if they sign up for Cub Scouting.) If you know of a kindergarten boy who is interested in joining Scouting and possibly attending Twilight Camp please contact Laura Tiebert or Laura McGrath and we will talk to them about it. Note that these incoming Tigers need to attend Twilight Camp with a parent).
Fun With Son Camp
This is an overnight family camping experience for Scouts. There are 2 locations: Camp Oakarro in Wadsworth,IL or Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan Scout Reservation in Pearson, WI. If you choose the Wadsworth location you have two date options: June 14-16 or June 28-30 (check in 5-8pm and check out 9am). If you choose the WI location the dates are June 21-23 (check in 4-8pm and check out 10am). We have had boys from Pack One attend Fun With Son camp in the past and they gave it rave reviews. Frank Panzica and his son Adam are already signed up to attend Fun With Son June 21-23 at Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan Scout Reservation. If you sign up for one of the sessions and you let either Frank or Laura M. know we can try to coordinate carpools among those who will be attending.
Akela Camp
This is an opportunity for Webelos 1 or 2 Scouts (so, boys who are currently in 3rd or 4th grade) to attend a 4 day/3 night camp with a parent at Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan Scout Reservation in Wisconsin. In addition to all sorts of fun outdoor activities the boys will be able to earn a number of Webelos pins. There are two options: June 30th-July 3rd or July 3rd-6th with check in at 1pm and check out at 10am. I am considering signing Russell/Will up for the June 30th-July 3rd option and it would be fun to have some other Pack One Webelos there. For those boys in 3rd grade who will be moving up to Webelos in April this is a great chance to get a head start on your Webelos requirements! Contact Laura M. if you signup for Akela Camp.
Cub Day Camp
If any of you are up for driving back and forth to Wadsworth every day for a week there is a Day Camp held at Camp Oakarro the weeks of June 17th, June 24th, July 15th and July 22nd (8:30am-3pm). They also have 1-day options the week of July 8th.
