Theme: Rational Animals

How do we understand rationality in animal minds? How does this differ from understanding rationality in human minds?

Reading:

We will read and discuss essays from Susan Hurley and Matthew Nudds(eds.) Rational Animals (Oxford University Press, 2006) and more recent articles on animal rationality.

Prerequisites:

Students are expected to have taken prior classes in either philosophy of mind, philosophy of action, philosophy of language, epistemology or decision theory. (This requirement is waived for students of the GTC Neural and Behavioral School.)

Application for Attendance:

The Oberseminar will be limited to 15 participants. Attendance is by invitation or application only.

(1) the degree program they are studying for (e.g. MA Philosophy, MSc Cognitive Science, PhD Philosophy, PhD Cognitive Neuroscience);

(2) a short statement (< 200 words) about their interest in their class;

(3) a CV; and

(4) for MA, MSc or BA students, please provide a list of related classes you have taken, the grades you received for these classes, and your grade point average (e.g. 1.5).
