The 2009 West Cork Over33 League sponsored by O’Brien’s Bar Rosscarbery concluded with Clonakilty Old Boys crowned champions of the inaugural tournament. The following article is a look back at how the Old Boys clinched the league title.
CLONAKILTY OLD BOYS - 2009 OVER33 LEAGUE CHAMPIONS
Clonakilty Old Boys earned the local bragging rights following a 4-1 derby victory over Clonakilty Masters in the West Cork Over33’s League sponsored by O’Brien’s Bar Rosscarbery last Wednesday evening.
The West Cork Over33’s League is proving a massive success after only two rounds of games. Wednesday night saw six teams in action producing 15 goals and plenty of attractive football. The Clonakilty derby produced an entertaining encounter with Old Boys eventually running out deserving 4-1 victors following an impressive team display in Ballyvackey.
There was little to choose between the sides with a lively opening to proceedings until a brace of goals from ace striker Leo Flynn handed Old Boys a 2-0 interval lead. Jonathan Hunt finished off a flowing move to make it 3-0 shortly after the break but within 5 minutes Tom Houlihan pounced to reduce the deficit. Michael Hurley powered home a header from a corner late on to secure Clonakilty Old Boy’s first league victory. Denis Enright, Michael Hurley, Jason Kidney and Martin Crowley were the pick of the Old Boy’s best performers with Mike Johnson and Dave Pegler impressing for the Masters.

The scheduled opening day fixtures between Clonakilty Old Boys versus Skibbereen was postponed due to bereavement in the Clonakilty area. The game was scheduled to be completed at a later date.

Clonakilty Old Boys narrowly edged Skibbereen 1-0 following a tight encounter in Carrigroe last Friday night. A late headed goal from Diarmuid Hayes earned Clon their second consecutive win but only after a titanic battle with the visitors. Nothing could seperate the teams until 2 minutes from time when Hayes rose to meet a Jonathan Hunt cross and seal a vital win for the Old Boys. Best for Clon included Willie Griffin, Brian O'Donovan and Lorne Edmeade with Ger Murray and Billy Flaherty the pick of Skibbereen's best performers.
The Old Boys followed up that performance with their third win on the trot away to Courtmacsherry on Wednesday and go top of the league table. Leo Flynn (2), Witlod Fraceck (penalty) and Martin Crowley each found the net in a comfortable 4-0 win. Neil Sexton, Brian Whelton and Larry Hunt stood out for the home side in spite of the defeat.

CLONAKILTY OLD BOYS - 2009 OVER33 LEAGUE CHAMPIONS
Clonakilty Old Boys moved 3 points clear at the summit of the West Cork Over33’s League sponsored by O’Brien’s Bar Rosscarbery following a hard fought victory away to Dunmanway Town last Wednesday.
The joint leaders of the Over33’s league served up a cracker on the pristine Mohona playing surface last Wednesday night. Old Boys recorded their 5th consecutive win of their league campaign with a 2-1 win over the previously unbeaten Dunmanway Town. The home side rarely threatened in the first half shorn of the talents of the missing John Caulfield. Clon Old Boys wasted a succession of chances with a Martin Crowley effort that rattled the upright the closest the visitors came to breaking the deadlock. The game remained scoreless until the second period when Cathal Crowley pounced on a rare Old Bay’s lapse and netted to fire Dunmanway 1-0 ahead.
Clonakilty Old Boys fought back superbly and equalised through a fine individual effort from man of the match Martin Crowley. The Old Boys were not content with a draw and Crowley unselfishly set up Arthur Andrzeyewski for a simple tap-in to secure a vital 3 points. Best for Dunmanway included Brian Collins, Cathal Crowley and David Hall. For Clon Old Boys: Martin Crowley, Jason Kidney, Willie Griffin and Lorne Edmeade impressed in a fine team performance.

Clonakilty Old Boys maintained their 100% start to the West Cork Over33’s season courtesy of a hard fought 2-0 win at home to Drinagh Rangers. Witlod Fraceck fired the Old Boys ahead shortly after a scoreless first half. Rangers wasted two fantastic opportunities to equalise bit the outstanding Clon defence stood firm and the hosts scored a second right on full time. Denis Enright finished off a flowing move to seal victory and keep Clonakilty Old Boys ahead of the chasing pack at the summit of the table.

Clonakilty Old Boys overcame the challenge of local rivals Clonakilty Masters 1-0 to qualify for the semi finals of the Bernard Hayes Travel Cup. Artur Andrzeyewski scored the only goal, a fantastic effort from 25 yards out in a disappointing encounter. Clon Old Boys will now travel to Cannon Crowley Park to face Drinagh Rangers in the last four.

Clonakilty Old Boys are the 2009 O’Briens Bar West Cork Over33’s League Champions following a narrow 1-0 victory over Rosscarbery in Carrigroe last Wednesday.
The Old Boys recorded their sixth consecutive league win of the season courtesy of a single Martin Crowley goal to secure the league crown. Clon created the better chances during a tight first half with a Jonathan hunt effort which hit the upright the closest the home side came to scoring. Rosscarbery stuck doggedly to their task of closing down the champions-elect and Vince Hayes should have put them ahead shortly before the break.
John Leahy pulled off a terrific save to deny the Ross striker and the only goal of a tight game finally arrived midway through the second half. Martin Crowley reacted quickest to stab home a rebound from a free kick in a crowded Ross penalty area and the home side held on for a 1-0 victory. News of Dunmanway Town’s 2-0 defeat filtered through and Clonakilty Old Boys celebrated winning the Over33’s league title.

The semi finals of both the West Cork Over33’s Cup sponsored by Bernard Hayes Travel and the West Cork Over33’s Shield sponsored by A Cut Above were decided in a welter of excitement last Wednesday evening.
Drinagh Rangers made it through to the Bernard Hayes West Cork Over33’s Cup final following a hard fought 1-0 victory over League Champions Clonakilty Old Boys. Martin Cronin fired in from close range midway through the first half for the only goal of the game. Despite being reduced to 10 men shortly after the resumption Drinagh defended manfully for the remainder of the tie. A combination of poor Old Boys finishing and dogged Drinagh defending earned the Cannon Crowley Park club a deserved spot in the Over33’s Cup final.

Clonakilty Old Boys finished off their championship winning season unbeaten following a hard-earned 1-1 draw with Ardfield in Carrigroe last Wednesday evening. Martin Crowley fired the Old Boys ahead with a left foot cracker in the opening half. A determined Ardfield fight back resulted in a deserved equaliser from top scorer Aidan Whelton to earn his side a share of the spoils.
Clon Old Boys were presented with the Over33's League trophy by official sponsor Pascal O'Brien of O'Brien's Bar Rosscarbery after the game amid wild celebrations which are sure to continue for the next few weekends. Best for Ardfield included Aidan Whelton, Noel O'Donovan, Steve Frost and Damien Dooley. Martin Crowley, Brian O'Donovan, Micheal Griffin and Michael Hurley impressed for the Old Boys.
