Cloughduv caused a huge upset in the Bernard Hayes Travel sponsored West Cork Over33 Cup by knocking out cup-holders Ardfield on Wednesday evening.
Newcomers to the West Cork Over33 League, Cloughduv, travelled to Carrigroe to face the 2009 Bernard Hayes Travel West Cork Over33 Cup winners Ardfield in a preliminary round tie. There was nothing to choose between two evenly matched sides during a goalless opening half until Ardfield finally broke the deadlock 5 minutes into the second period.
Aidan Whelton netted his first goal of the campaign to put Ardfield one up and the home side looked set for victory. Cloughduv had other ideas and refused to accept defeat. The visitors pushed further numbers forward in the second half and were rewarded for their attacking endeavour with an equaliser with just 3 minutes remaining. Tim Barry Murphy had a fine game for the visitors and levelled the scores at 1-1. A tense cup tie looked set for extra time until Cloughduv shocked the cup holders with an injury time winner.
Ray O’Sullivan gathered possession deep inside the Ardfield half and arrowed a magnificent long-range effort into the net to win the tie for Cloughduv. Despite the loss Ardfield enjoyed fine performances from Steve Frost, Wayne Howarth, Tony Hayes and Bernard Hayes. Cloughduv celebrated a terrific victory with Tim Barry Murphy, Ray O’Sullivan and John Madden impressing.
Drinagh Rangers defeated Castletown Celtic 4-1 in the second preliminary round cup tie completed last Wednesday evening in Canon Crowley Park. Rangers began well and were awarded a penalty after only 2 minutes had elapsed when Martin Cronin was fouled in the box. The evergreen Vince Collins stepped forward to convert the resulting penalty. Castletown settled despite having fallen behind so early and Tim Buckley equalised in the 20th minute.
Ace marksman Mike Doolan restored Drinagh’s lead shortly before the interval with a sublime finish by expertly chipping the goalkeeper. Castletown pushed hard for a second equaliser until Martin Cronin made sure of Drinagh’s win with an unstoppable effort from the edge of the penalty area to make it 3-1. Dean Simpson put the icing on the cake for Drinagh with a late effort and Rangers progressed to the quarter finals. Best for Drinagh included Martin Cronin, Mike Doolan and Colm Daly while Tim Buckley, Barry Buckley and John Hilliard were the pick of Castletown Celtic’s best performers.
The revised draw for the last eight of the Bernard Hayes Travel sponsored West Cork Over33 Cup is as follows: Cloughduv vs. Drinagh Rangers, Rosscarbery vs. Skibbereen, Dunmanway Town vs. Clonakilty AFC and Courtmacsherry vs. Clonakilty Town. The quarter final ties are to be completed on Wednesday the 30th of June.
