Skibbereen maintained their 100% record to stay top of the West Cork Over33 League sponsored by O’Brien’s Bar Rosscarbery thanks to a crucial away win over Dunmanway Town on Wednesday evening writes Ger McCarthy.
Skibbereen made it three league wins out of three following a hard fought 2-1 victory over Dunmanway Town in the Race Field. Michael McCarthy forced the Town defence into an error and the Baltimore Road club broke the deadlock after only 12 minutes. There was little to choose between the sides until the 45th minute when Jack Carroll doubled Skibb’s advantage with a well taken effort. Cathal Kelleher pulled a goal back for Town late on but Skibbereen ran out deserving 2-1 winners to stay top of the standings. Best for Skibb included Michael McCarthy, Brian Carroll and Ger Murray while Cathal Kelleher and Kieran O’Leary shone for Dunmanway.
Last season’s title winners Clonakilty Town kept pace with Skibbereen at the summit of the table courtesy of a narrow 1-0 victory away to Rosscarbery. Martin Crowley netted the only goal of a tight encounter earning Clon Town their third consecutive league victory. Rosscarbery remain rooted to the bottom of the table but contributed much to an entertaining game where Denis Callanan, Pascal O’Brien and Michael Keohane impressed for the hosts and John Leahy, Jason Kidney and Keith Collins caught the eye for Clon Town.
Courtmacsherry’s excellent start to the season continued with a surprise 1-0 win at home to Drinagh Rangers. Declan Hennessy headed the only goal with just 6 minutes remaining to move Courtmacsherry into third place. A severely depleted Drinagh still await their first league win of the new campaign but enjoyed fine performances from Kevin Marron, Ken Kingston and Denis Nolan. Colin Crowley, Declan Hennessy and Padraig Deasy were the pick of Courtmac’s best players.
Castletown Celtic remain in mid-table following a 1-1 draw away to Clonakilty AFC in Ballyvackey. Francie O’Callaghan fired the visitors ahead after 20 minutes but Clon AFC levelled on the hour mark and both sides had to settle for a point. Barry Buckley, Francie O’Callaghan and John Dullea impressed for Castletown.
Match of the day took place in Crookstown where Cloughduv and Ardfield served up a four goal thriller. Paul McShane opened the scoring with a terrific solo effort, dribbling the entire length of the pitch to fire Ardfield ahead. Cloughduv rebounded well and Jason Flynn brought parity to the score-line just before the interval. The home side edged 2-1 in front through an opportunistic header from ace marksman Donny O’Sullivan but Ardfield equalised with 10 minutes to go from an expertly converted penalty by Noel O’Donovan. It finished 2-2 with Paul McShane, Damien Dooley and Jim Ahern best for Ardfield. Jason Flynn and Martin McCarthy stood out for Cloughduv.
