AS APPEARED IN THE EVENING ECHO EDITION: Fri 13th August 2010
Drinagh Rangers and Clonakilty Town will contest the 2010 West Cork Over33 Cup final sponsored by Bernard Hayes Travel while Rosscarbery and Ardfield will clash in the ‘A Cut Above’ Over33 Shield decider writes Ger McCarthy.
Rosscarbery’s recent run of good form continued on Wednesday evening with a penalty shoot-out victory away to Courtmacsherry to qualify for the Over33 Shield final. A tight semi-final was still goalless after extra-time so penalties were necessary to decide the outcome. Ross net-minder Mike Hubbard was man of the match and converted efforts from Vince Hayes, John Fitzpatrick and Sean Linehan earned Rosscarbery a narrow 3-2 shoot-out win. Jerry Shanahan, John O’Regan and Gordon O’Dwyer played superbly for Ross with William Madden and Declan Hennessy the pick of Courtmacsherry’s best players.
Ardfield will be Rosscarbery’s opponents in the Shield decider following a hard fought 2-0 semi-final win at home to Castletown Celtic in Carrigroe. Tony Hayes fired the hosts ahead after 10 minutes but Castletown made a game of it until Ardfield struck again midway through the second half. Paul McShane embarked on a solo dribble from deep in his own half which saw the Ardfield player evade a succession of challenges before slotting the ball home to earn his side a deserved 2-0 victory. Damien Dooley, Pat Griffin and Tony Hayes stood out for Ardfield.
Drinagh Rangers inflicted a first defeat of the season on Skibbereen in Canon Crowley Park to make it through to the West Cork Over33 Cup final. Skibb dominated possession throughout but a sometimes bruising semi-final tie finished scoreless at full time. There was little to choose between the sides until a converted penalty 8 minutes into extra time from the ageless Vince Collins earned Drinagh a narrow 1-0 victory. Ken Kingston, Kevin Marron and Cathal McCarthy were in fine form for Rangers while Liam Hurley, PJ Collins and Fachtna Connolly impressed for Skibbereen.
Clonakilty Town progressed to the Over33 Cup final following a closely fought 2-1 victory over local rivals Clonakilty AFC in Ballyvackey. Tom Houlihan fired the AFC ahead with a dipping volley early on until an opportunistic Brian O’Donovan effort brought parity to the score-line just before the interval. Both sides created a plethora of chances to win it but a late Jonathan Hunt header edged Clonakilty Town into the final. Mike Johnson, Tony Blinston, Paul Bray and Witlod Fracek were outstanding for Clon AFC with Lorne Edmeade, Keith Collins and John Leahy excellent for Clonakilty Town.
