AS APPEARED IN THE EVENING ECHO EDITION: Fri 2nd July 2010
The quarter finals of the Bernard Hayes Travel West Cork Over33 Cup were completed on Wednesday evening with extra time and penalties needed to decide two of the fixtures.
Dunmanway Town and Clonakilty AFC clashed in the Race Field and a cracking cup tie needed penalties to decide the outcome. The tie ended 1-1 after normal time and 2-2 after extra time before the AFC eventually won out 6-5 following a nerve-tingling penalty shoot-out. Jacek Dzidowski and Renaldas Pocevicius found the net for Clonakilty AFC with Fachtna Collins and John Kelly scoring for a gallant Dunmanway outfit. Best for Clon included Martin D’Luohy, Sean Murray and Mavan Dobrowolski while Fachtna Collins, Aidan McCarthy and Kieran O’Leary stood out for Dunmanway.
Drinagh Rangers needed extra time to overcome the challenge of a dogged Cloughduv side following a five goal thriller in Canon Crowley Park. The opening half finished scoreless until Cloughduv’s Martin McCarthy and Drinagh’s Mike Doolan each netted and the tie ended 1-1. Despite losing a player in extra time Cathal Hughes’ penalty pushed Cloughduv ahead. Rangers fought back impressively with Liam O’Brien levelling before a sublime Mike Doolan effort 3 minutes from time won it for Drinagh. John Madden, Dan Buckley and Donny O’Sullivan played well for Cloughduv while Mike Doolan, Kevin Marron and Denis Nolan were the pick of Rangers’ best performers.
Skibbereen remain on course for a League and Cup double following their 3-1 quarter final victory away to Rosscarbery. Lee Miles fired the visitors ahead after 15 minutes but a superb Michael Keohane header levelled for Ross. Two goals in the space of five second half minutes eventually won it for Skibb with Ger Murray and Michael Hurley netting in a 3-1 victory for the current league leaders. Best for Ross included Raymond Hayes, Vince Hayes and Dermot Kerr while Eoghan Daly, Fachtna Connolly and Pat Connolly stood out for Skibb.
Clonakilty Town gained revenge for a league defeat at the hands of Courtmacsherry the previous week by knocking the same opposition out of the Over33 Cup last Wednesday. A well taken first half goal from Leo Flynn was followed by a Martin Crowley cracker and a late Donal O’Donovan strike to earn Clon Town a richly deserved 3-0 victory. Best for Clonakilty Town included Michael Hurley, Jonathan Hunt and Martin Crowley while Neil Sexton and Donal Deasy impressed for Courtmacsherry.
Over33 Cup semi-finals: Clon AFC vs. Clon Town and Drinagh vs. Skibb with both ties scheduled for August 11th. The winners of Courtmacsherry vs. Dunmanway Town (in Courtmac) will be at home to Rosscarbery and Castletown Celtic will host Ardfield in the semi-finals of the Over33 Shield also on August 11th.
