Skibbereen moved a step closer to claiming the 2010 West Cork Over33 League title sponsored by O’Brien’s Bar Rosscarbery following a crucial victory over Clonakilty Town last Wednesday.
Reigning champions Clon Town were defeated 3-1 by unbeaten league-leaders Skibbereen on a beautiful evening in the Baltimore Road. Michael McCarthy broke the deadlock just past the quarter hour mark and Lee Miles doubled Skibbereen’s lead five minutes before the break. A below-par Clon Town pulled one back through top scorer Martin Crowley before a late breakaway saw Michael McCarthy bag his second of the evening to secure a richly deserved 3-1 win. Skibb remain undefeated and are now four points clear at the summit of the standings with only two rounds of league fixtures remaining. Micheal Griffin and Martin Crowley played well for Clon with Pat Connolly, Eoghan Daly and Liam Hurley outstanding for Skibb.
Courtmacsherry maintained their position in third place thanks to a hard fought 1-1 draw away to Clonakilty AFC in Ballyvackey. Paul Bray fired Clon AFC 1-0 ahead as early as the sixth minute until a John O’Donovan equaliser just before the interval secured a point for a Courtmacsherry. William Madden, Paul Smith and Norman Fleming were best for Courtmac.
Dunmanway Town recorded their third win of the campaign thanks to 2-0 success over a battling Cloughduv. Fachtna Collins’ overhead kick handed Town an early lead. Cloughduv fought bravely but couldn’t conjure up an equaliser and a last minute strike from Aidan McCarthy secured a 2-0 victory for Dunmanway. Richie Collins, Sean Sheehan and Joe Kelly stood out for Dunmanway while Paul Shanahan, Brian O’Callaghan and John O’Shea impressed for Cloughduv.
Ardfield proved too strong for a determined Rosscarbery running out 3-1 winners. Geoff Wycherly broke the deadlock with a cracking strike for Ross but a devastating 10 minute spell saw the Carrigroe club score three times without reply. Alec Butler netted Ardfield’s equaliser and then Damien Dooley struck direct from a corner shortly afterwards. Aidan Whelton completed the scoring with a terrific strike to win it 3-1 for Ardfield in what was a cracking local derby.
Drinagh Rangers inflicted a 6-0 defeat on Castletown Celtic with the Over33 League’s top marksman Mike Doolan helping himself to four of his side’s total. Celtic simply had no answer to Drinagh’s potent attack and additional strikes from Martin Cronin and Colm Daly cemented an emphatic win for the Canon Crowley Park club. Barry Buckley, Gordon Anderson and Ger Hennigan impressed for Castletown despite the heavy defeat.
