A Jack Carroll hat-trick helped Skibbereen maintain top spot in the West Cork Over33 League sponsored by O’Brien’s Bar Rosscarbery last Wednesday evening writes Ger McCarthy.
The Baltimore Road club made it four league wins on the trot with a routine 4-0 win at home to Cloughduv. Jack Carroll proved to be Skibbereen’s hero with a well taken hat-trick and Jeff Heaton-Jones completed the scoring late on. Despite the defeat Cloughduv enjoyed good performances from Brendan O’Sullivan and Derry Keane. Skibbereen has now moved 3 points clear at the summit of the table thanks to inspired displays from Jack Carroll, Pat Connolly, Fachtna Connolly and Eoghan Daly and are now favourites to win this season’s title.
Courtmacsherry moved into joint-second place in the standings with a deserved 3-1 win at home to previously unbeaten Clonakilty Town. The reigning champions had no answer to a terrific Courtmac start which yielded 3 goals without reply. A deflected own goal handed the hosts a 20th minute lead and when Denis Whelton headed a second 15 minutes into the second period Clon Town were in trouble. Whelton made sure of Courtmacsherry’s victory with another header late on. Kevin Kingston grabbed late consolation for Clonakilty for whom Jonathan Hunt hit the upright from a penalty in the dying embers of the game.
Clonakilty AFC won their first game of the season on Dunmanway Town in Ballyvackey running out 2-1 winners. Simon Bowden broke the deadlock for the AFC midway through the first half but the prolific Cathal Crowley equalised in the 45th minute of a tight encounter. The game looked set to end in a draw until Michael O’Mahony connected with a corner to head the winning goal late on. Best for Clon included Simon Bowden, Witech Fracek and Martin Dobrowolski and Cathal Crowley, Cathal Kelleher and Noel O’Donovan best for Dunmanway.
Ardfield and Drinagh Rangers played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in Carrigroe with the evergreen Don Hurley firing Rangers into an early 2-0 lead courtesy of a well taken brace. Ardfield fought back impressively and Aidan Whelton pulled one back just before the interval. Damien Dooley equalised with a daisy-cutter from the corner of the area in the second period and the sides had to settle for a share of the spoils. Bernard Hayes, Damien Dooley and Diarmuid Keohane were the pick of Ardfield’s best performers and Don Hurley, Mike Doolan and Brian McCarthy Drinagh’s top players.
Rosscarbery earned their first 3 points of the campaign thanks to a welcome 2-0 win over Castletown Celtic. Bart Kerrisk opened the scoring in the first half and Ross comfortably held on to their lead until the break. Denis Calnan made sure of Ross’s victory with a magnificent second half strike in a game John Fitzpatrick, Roy Hawkins and Jeremy Murphy starred. Despite the defeat John Hillard, Mark Hillard and John Dullea were Castletown Celtic’s standout players.
