Skibbereen and Clonakilty Town maintained their 100% starts to top the O’Brien’s Bar Rosscarbery West Cork Over33 League table after Wednesday night’s results.
A solitary Michael McCarthy goal was enough to earn Skibbereen a narrow 1-0 victory at home to Courtmacsherry in the Baltimore Road. The hosts were reduced to ten men during the second half but Courtmacsherry couldn’t find an equaliser despite forcing a succession of corners and free-kicks. Best for Skibbereen included Pat Connolly, Fachtna Connolly, Liam Hurley and Shane O’Brien. A second consecutive win sees Skibbereen stay top of the table after two rounds on goal difference from Clonakilty Town.
The defending West Cork Over33 Champions, Clon Town, came away with a hard-fought 1-0 victory away to Drinagh Rangers in Canon Crowley Park thanks to a well taken Declan Cox effort midway through the second half. Drinagh bombarded the Clonakilty goal throughout a dominant second period but the Town defence stood firm to earn their second win in as many games. Kevin Kingston, Lorne Edmeade and Declan Cox were the pick of Town’s best performers with Danny McQueen, Colm Daly and Brian McCarthy impressing for Drinagh.
Dunmanway Town moved into third place courtesy of a 2-0 win away to Rosscarbery and maintained their undefeated start to the campaign. A brace of goals from Cathal Crowley (including a 25 yard free-kick) proved the difference between the sides. Eugene Daly, Denis McSweeney and Bart Kerrisk stood out for Rosscarbery while Cathal Crowley, Noel Murray and Cathal Kelleher were the pick of Dunmanway’s top performers.
Ardfield earned their first 3 points of the new campaign thanks to a 2-1 victory at home to Castletown Celtic in Carrigroe. Francis O’Callaghan broke the deadlock for Castletown early on before Alec Butler equalised from the penalty spot for Ardfield. Diarmuid Keohane put the home side 2-1 ahead just before the interval and Ardfield held on for their first league win of the season. Steve Frost, Paul McShane and Andy Hanei caught the eye for Ardfield with Barry Buckley, Sean Fleming and Gordon Anderson the best performers for a battling Castletown Celtic.
Cloughduv and Clonakilty AFC secured their first points of the new Over33 League following an entertaining 2-2 draw in Crookstown. Donal O’Sullivan netted to give Cloughduv a 1-0 interval lead but a brace from the AFC’s Gary Smith put the visitors 2-1 ahead. A late Ray O’Sullivan goal resulted in a 2-2 draw in a game Gary Smith, Simon Bowden and Michael O’Mahony impressed for Clonakilty and Donal O’Sullivan and Ray O’Sullivan were Cloughduv’s best players.
