Matchday 13

AS APPEARED IN THE EVENING ECHO EDITION: Fri 20th August 2010

Skibbereen were crowned 2010 West Cork Over33 League Champions on the final day of the league campaign thanks to a 2-0 win over Castletown Celtic writes Ger McCarthy.

The Baltimore Road club claimed the coveted league trophy - sponsored by O’Brien’s Bar Rosscarbery –with a hard fought victory at home to Castletown Celtic on Wednesday evening. The visitors produced a commendable performance against their high-flying opponents but were undone by two well taken second half efforts.

The game was scoreless at the interval until top scorer Michael McCarthy netted three minutes into the second half. Jeff Heaton-Jones made sure of the victory with a second strike late on and Skibbereen finished the campaign as unbeaten Champions with a terrific record of 7 wins and 2 draws from their 9 league fixtures. Gordon Anderson, Sean Fleming and John Hilliard impressed for Castletown with Michael McCarthy, Ger Murray and Shane O’Brien shone for the newly crowned Champions.

Last year’s league winners Clonakilty Town had to settle for the runners-up spot but signed off their campaign with a comprehensive 4-0 win at home to Dunmanway Town in Carrigroe. A Kevin Kingston effort edged Clon ahead at the interval and second half strikes from Leo Flynn, John Leahy and Jonathan Hunt capped a commanding display. Under-strength Dunmanway’s best players included Brian Collins and Richie Collins while Ger O’Sullivan, Declan Cox and Donal O’Donovan shone for Clon.

Courtmacsherry rounded off an impressive campaign with a 1-0 victory at home to Cloughduv to secure third place. Colin Crowley scored the only goal of the game on the quarter hour mark and that was enough to earn Courtmac their 5th win of the season. Best for the home side included William Madden, Paul O’Sullivan and Colin Crowley while Martin McCarthy, Fiachra Kierse and Dan Buckley were the pick of Cloughduv’s best players.

Drinagh Rangers warmed up for their West Cork Over33 Cup final date with Clonakilty Town with a slender 1-0 victory at home to Rosscarbery. The Canon Crowley Park club were indebted to the ageless Vince Collins who coolly converted an injury-time penalty to earn Drinagh their 4th win of the campaign. The game flowed from end to end throughout in a thrilling encounter but Rangers grabbed the all important goal in the dying embers and Rosscarbery must now turn their attentions to their upcoming West Cork Over33 Shield final against Ardfield. Best for Ross were Ray Hayes, Denis Calnan, Vince Hayes and Denis McSweeney while Phil Allison, Vince Collins and Brian McCarthy were Drinagh’s top performers.
