The West Cork Over33 League title sponsored by O’Brien’s Bar Rosscarbery remains unclaimed following a dramatic week of action writes Ger McCarthy.
Champions-elect Skibbereen were held to a shock 1-1 draw by a gutsy Rosscarbery in the Baltimore Road on Wednesday evening. Needing a victory over a Ross outfit (who have only won once this term) to claim the title Pat Connolly duly broke the deadlock for the hosts after 25 minutes. Skibbereen dominated possession for long periods but wasted a succession of chances and Rosscarbery fought back to deservedly level through a Tim Hayes corner-kick. Skibb’s failure to grab an expected victory means the destination of the 2010 Over33 League Championship now goes to the final day of fixtures on Aug 18th.
Reigning champions Clonakilty Town overcame local rivals Clonakilty AFC 1-0 in Ballyvackey to keep their slim title hopes alive thanks to a solitary strike from Nick Harrison. A tight game was decided by Harrison’s first half effort leaving Clon Town just 2 points behind leaders Skibbereen with one round of league games remaining.
Courtmacsherry moved into third place in the standings following their 4-1 win at home to Castletown Celtic. Francie O’Callaghan put Castletown ahead early on but goals from Denis Whelton (2, 1 penalty), Pat Sexton and James Black earned Courtmac their victory.
Ardfield overcame the challenge of Dunmanway Town on Tuesday evening in Ballyvackey running out 3-1 winners. The Carrigroe club hit the front through a Diarmuid Keohane effort and then Aidan Whelton doubled his side’s lead shortly before the break. Kieran O’Leary pulled one back for Dunmanway Town before Wayne Howarth sealed Ardfield’s win with a terrific strike late on.
Drinagh Rangers went goal crazy at home to a luckless Cloughduv running out 8-2 winners in Canon Crowley Park. The Over33 League’s top scorer Mike Doolan grabbed the headlines once again with a well taken hat-trick. The evergreen Don Hurley weighed in with a brace of goals and Colm McCarthy, Vince Collins and Martin Cronin strikes completed Rangers’ total. Cloughduv’s goals came courtesy of a converted Mervin Beasley penalty and a John O’Shea strike.
It promises to be a fascinating climax to the 2010 West Cork Over33 League with Skibb heading into the final round of games just 2 points clear of Clon Town. Unbeaten Skibbereen are at home to Castletown Celtic on the final day while Clonakilty Town entertain Dunmanway Town in Carrigroe.
