The Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) is a hub and campus resource that serves all students, staff, and faculty utilizing a community and cultural-competency based model. It provides a network of comprehensive services and innovative programs that support and advance the personal, cultural, intellectual, and social development of our diverse and international students. OMA helps lead diversity related programs and initiatives while working with campus partners to build an inclusive and culturally engaged community.
OMA oversees a wide array of programs and mentors students in a number of different cohorts. OMA runs educational programs and training sessions for the campus. OMA also oversees the Social Justice Center (UCC 370) and the LGBTQ+ Resource Center (UCC 380). The LGBTQ+ Resource Center promotes the university's commitment to diversity and creating a safe and healthy campus environment through education, support, advocacy, and the fostering of equity for all students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity and expression.
Student interns in this position will be assisting multiple OMA programs, from writing for the LGBTQ+ Out and Ally list's monthly Snapshot newsletter to assisting with OMA's multiple brochures. Interns can expect support and feedback in a timely fashion and an open-door policy for assistance. This is a fully in-person internship, as OMA believes it is very important for interns to experience the office's spaces and connect with staff.
Responsibilities:
Students in this position have undertaken a variety of tasks, and they could be expected to work on content for projects such as:
Educational tool kits (for the Social Justice Center and LGBTQ+ Resource Center)
Student and staff highlights (for newsletters, social media)
Well-being tips for various cohorts
Promotional materials for OMA, the centers, and its programs
Updating/developing training materials
Please note: exact projects are determined after meeting with the student to determine their learning goals, as well as what content is most needed from semester to semester.
Qualifications:
Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills
Internet and tech literacy
Good foundation in conveying concepts through a variety of media
Communicates well with diverse groups
Demonstrates empathy, sensitivity and patience
Can arrive and complete work both in a timely manner
Will communicate any challenges immediately and be open and honest
Requirements:
Complete 120 (min.) unpaid hours
Take the time to learn about the office's mission, purpose, staff roles, and current initiatives
Respect all OMA staff, members of every culture, and members of the LGBTQ+ community
Attend weekly check-ins with supervisor
