The Lowell Association for the Blind (LAB) is a non-profit, community-based organization dedicated to working with the blind and visually impaired. Established in 1923, the Association has been serving the Greater Lowell/ Merrimack Valley community for almost 100 years. LAB is supported by contributions from memorial donations, grants from foundations, and program funding. The office in downtown Lowell provides 4,000 sq. feet of easily accessible space for meetings, adaptive equipment training, Braille lessons and a radio-recording studio.
Its mission: To support, educate, and nurture the blind and visually impaired residents of the Greater Merrimack Valley by helping them enrich their lives and gain independence. Its further mission is to stimulate the interest of the general public in the problems and issues facing the blind and visually impaired and to educate them to understand that the blind and visually impaired are productive members of society, seeking fulfillment of their human potential.
The intern will report to the Executive Director on projects that will promote the organization. The intern and Executive Director will work closely to identify projects of interest to the intern as well as beneficial to LAB.
Responsibilities:
Student interns at LAB will undertake a variety of tasks, including but not limited to some of the following examples:
Writing and editing grant proposals
Developing marketing materials and social media posts
Interviewing clients and writing profiles
Completing other writing assignments, such as press releases
Qualifications:
Strong writing skills
Competence with a variety of media
Exhibits professional communication: for example, answers correspondence promptly and appropriately; sends regular progress updates to supervisor
Reaches out to supervisor when questions or problems arise, and accepts feedback well
Works well independently and collaboratively, when required
Requirements:
Complete 120 (min.) unpaid hours (position can be remote, in-person or hybrid)
Internship hours are flexible—the LAB office hours are Monday through Friday from 8 AM until 4 PM
Interest in supporting the visually impaired (no experience with this population required)
Arrive on time as scheduled; contact supervisor in advance if you need to change your hours
