The UMass Lowell Connector is the student newspaper and definitive source of student news at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. All editorial and staff positions are filled by volunteer students. The newspaper is printed by Turley Publications (Palmer, Mass.) and is distributed free of charge on Tuesdays during the academic year, as well as updated regularly online at umlconnector.com.
The Connector is offering positions in copy editing and social media, though all interns are expected to write stories for the paper as needed, as well. While in-person meetings will be a part of the internship, interns will be expected to do a substantial chunk of their work in their own time and be self-responsible for all deadlines assigned to them. The Connector meets on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. and Sundays at 11:00 a.m., and all interns are strongly encouraged to attend both meetings weekly.
Copy Editors for The Connector are responsible for reading and editing the stories that are submitted. This is a good position for students who are busy during the week and free on weekends, as well as students with a strong grasp of English language conventions and a knack for editing.
Responsibilities:
Students will undertake a variety of tasks, including—but not limited to—some of the following examples:
Over the weekend, edit stories that are submitted during the week by Sunday at 11 am
During the week, catch up on editing stories put on backlog to be used in following weeks
Write stories whenever assigned
Qualifications:
Excellent editing and proofreading skills
Solid understanding of AP Style
Competence in writing newspaper articles
Presents ideas effectively
Requirements:
Complete 120 (min.) unpaid hours (combination remote and in-person)
Must have time to work on Saturdays (remote)
Should attend layout meetings on Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. whenever possible

The Connector is looking to expand its social media presence and is seeking Social Media Interns to do so. This is a good position for students who are social media savvy and looking to apply these skills to a professional context and are looking for a position with flexibility in both time and creativity.
Responsibilities:
Students will undertake a variety of tasks, including—but not limited to—some of the following examples:
Generate and promote content on social media
Work closely with the Editor-in-Chief to produce creative ideas for social media engagement
Write stories whenever assigned
Qualifications:
Strong computer, internet, and social media literacy
Well-versed in use of popular social media websites, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok
Communicates well with diverse groups
Adjusts plans for the unexpected
Competence in writing a newspaper article
Requirements:
Complete 120 (min.) unpaid hours (combination remote and in-person)
Strongly encouraged to attend Sunday layout meetings from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
