The Office of Cultural Affairs & Special Events (CASE) is the official arts and events agency for the City of Lowell, MA. Established by City ordinance in May 2008, CASE's mission is to help create a high quality cultural environment that offers appealing experiences to the city’s diverse population, stimulates economic development, enhances quality of life and encourages people to experience and participate in the culture of the community.
Join a fun team and help promote Lowell’s special events. As a CASE intern, you will gain hands-on experience working in a professional environment and obtain vital skills for career advancement. This position will be a great way to get experience both in-office and in the field, helping to plan, promote and implement high-quality events. Assistance with interns' future career goals will also be provided when possible.
Interns will be expected to follow general style guidelines for written content, but are otherwise encouraged to write in accordance with their own personal style, so long as they promote the cultural diversity and economic prosperity of Lowell.
Responsibilities:
Interns may undertake a combination of the tasks listed below depending on the time of year and student experience and skills:
Write, edit, and publish a weekly newsletter documenting events around Lowell
Gather materials for weekly newsletter and write / reformat promotional content for events when necessary
Develop and contribute to social media posts
Help plan and coordinate the City’s annual large and small scale special events such as WinterFest, July 4th Celebration, and City of Lights Parade and Celebration
Assist with City logistical support for other events including the Lowell Folk Festival, Southeast Asian Water Festival, Monster Bash
Draft press releases, event descriptions and promotional materials
Organize and distribute periodic event email blast for distribution to downtown businesses and other interested parties
Maintain distribution lists
Communicate with outside agencies regarding ongoing events as necessary
Participate in post-event evaluation
Help coordinate business participation with certain City events (Monster Bash Trick or Treat Trail, City of Lights Window Decorating, and Hot Chocolate Contests)
Qualifications:
Major: English, communications, public relations, business administration, event management or a related field
Versatile writer, willing to advance skills and range
Dependable, self-starter interested in developing creative problem-solving skills
Solid computer skills and literacy in Microsoft Office package
Interest in communications, special events, and outreach
Communicates well with diverse groups
Good humor and willingness to work in a fast-paced, team environment
Maintains a regular schedule but can adjust well to changes
Prepared to participate in meetings, ask for help when needed, and accept feedback from supervisor(s)
Prior experience with Squarespace and any graphic design tools desirable (but not required)
Requirements:
Complete 120 (min.) unpaid hours
Interns will be expected to work in the office, completing their scheduled hours within the times that the office is open: Mon. -Thurs. 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, and Fri. 8:00 – noon. Occasional remote work may be possible, if necessary.
Availability to work some weekends during special events desirable. (These hours count towards the total required minimum.)
