For 5/27/2016: Video labs:
1. The Joly Photometer: a. In the Joly Photometer video: What can you say about the 2 bulbs? The CFL is a 23W bulb and the incandescent bulb is 100W. Determine the relative efficiency of the 2 bulbs.
b. In the Light Bulb Tests video: Find the wattage of the reference bulb.
2. Keep in Time or Keep in Time: Nine student-musicians line up on a soccer field and clap to the beat of a metronome broadcast through a megaphone. Find the speed of sound. How accurate is your result?
3. Gravity Powered Clock or Gravity Powered Clock or download (Quicktime Video 9.5MB Feb14 14): This video shows a "grandfather" clock powered by suspended masses that are pulled downward by the force of gravity. What quantities can you calculate using information from this video? What other information can you find in this video? Come up with questions for the information you have. Ask other groups the questions you come up with. You may find it useful to know: The video is filmed in Minnesota. The shutter was set at one exposure per second.

Geosciences Bridge Program: The Geosciences Bridge Program is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and NOAA’s Living Marine Resources Cooperative Science Center (LMRCSC) at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. The program is for high school seniors to introduce them to ocean sciences, atmospheric sciences, and geographic information systems (GIS)/Remote Sensing techniques; strengthen their knowledge of mathematics; teach them life skills that will prepare them for college life; and enhance their academic performances through advisement, social support, and tutorial services.
The program offers a 6-week paid internship ($500/week stipend + housing + meals) for students planning to pursue careers in the geosciences. The program includes lectures, field trips, hands-on activities, 2 courses for college credit (math and freshman seminar), housing, meals, travel to and from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and a stipend.
