Robert Jessep was born in 1744 in Hockham, Norfolk, England, the son of Mary and Robert. In the parish records, at his marriage, he is described as the son of Robert Jessup the Carpenter. (Norfolk: Norwich - Freemen of Norwich, 1714-1752)

He was married four times and had 13 sons and five daughters. His first wife, Elizabeth Allen, had one child who survived, Suzannah, and two children who died as infants then she died at age 40.  He then married Elizabeth Reeve and they had nine children.  He then married Mary Batley and they had one child.  Finally he married Mary Gall and had five more children. He died in 1824 in his hometown, having lived a long life of 80 years, and was buried in Norfolk, England.

When Elizabeth Reeve was born in 1744 in Hockham, Norfolk, England, their father, Thomas, was 24 and their mother, Mary, was 24. She married Robert Jessep on November 2, 1771, in her hometown. They had nine children in 13 years. She died on August 21, 1804, in her hometown at the age of 60.

Neither could read or write, according to their marriage record where both "made their mark" to sign. (see below)
