A meeting of the SWCYRA was held last Thursday to decide fixtures for this year’s season with rowing clubs and regatta committees. Unsurprisingly the popularity of coastal rowing resulted in a huge number of dates to be marked into the calendar for 2016.

This year’s regattas kick off with Rosscarbery on May 22nd followed by the Galley Flash and Ring hosting their annual regattas on June 5th and 6th respectively. Glandore will play venue to the first and second championship regattas of the year on June12th and 19th, with Kilmacsimon regatta on Saturday June 18th while Sherkin regatta will finish off June on the 26th.

Championship number three will take place in Union Hall on July 3rd, while Castletownsend will be the venue for this year’s fourth championship on July 17th. The following week, on July 24th, clubs will travel to Kinsale and six days later on July 30th they will compete at Courtmacsherry. On July 31st clubs from all over Cork will race it out at the 2016 County Finals.

In August Schull will round off the championship regattas for the season and the following week Ballyshannon, in Co. Donegal, will host this year’s All Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships from Friday the 12th to Sunday the 14th.

Despite packing so much into such a short season clubs will also have a chance to take part in some ‘fun’ run events. Beginning in April clubs will have an opportunity to test out their teams speed with Kilmacsimon’s Head of River event on the 17th while three weeks later Galley Flash will host their annual 2-Oar-Challenge on May 8th. May will also offer rowers a chance to show off their abilities with the South Coast Indoor Rowing Championships, hosted by Ring, on May 29th.

Finally, in a correction to the previous South West report, John Burchill was omitted from the list of SWCYRA Officers as one of this season’s camera operators.
