June 2014 First-Year Law Students' Examination

The next administration of the California First-Year Law Student's Examination (aka the "California Baby Bar Exam," "FYLSX," or "FYLSE") is June 2014 (the exact exam date has not yet been announced by the California Bar). Results from the October 2013 California Baby Bar Exam are scheduled to be mailed to applicants on Friday, December 13, 2013.

Format of the California Baby Bar Exam

The California Baby Bar Exam is comprised of 4 essays and 100 multiple-choice questions. The 4 essays are allocated 4 hours, and the 100 multiple-choice questions are allocated 3 hours.

Scope and Subject Coverage of the California Baby Bar Exam

The California Baby Bar Exam covers the subjects of Contracts, Criminal Law, and Torts. The California Baby Bar Exam does not test California-specific law. Instead, the exam tests "legal theories and principles of general applicability." Detailed knowledge of California law is not tested. For the subject of Contracts, the scope of the California Baby Bar Exam also includes all of Articles 1 and 2 of the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC).

Grading of the California Baby Bar Exam

An applicant's raw multiple-choice score (out of 100) is converted to a 400-point scale. Each of the four essays can receive a raw score between 40 and 100 (total raw essay score range of 160-400). The total raw essay score is then converted to the same 400-point scale of measurement used for the multiple-choice portion of the exam. An applicant's total score on the California Baby Bar Exam is the sum of the converted multiple-choice and essay scores (each section is weighted 50%). A total scaled score of 560 or higher (scaled average of 70%) is needed to pass the California Baby Bar Examination.

Over the past 9 years, the average passage rate for the California Baby Bar Exam is 23.02% with a low of 14.7% percent (October 2008).
