Prior Bar Questions and Answers

Weeks 45 through 48 of each year of law study are reserved for review of the material covered in your Lesson Assignments. We recommend this time be devoted in part to answering (under exam conditions) prior bar questions. You should compare your answers to the "Selected Answers".

Remember that locating and discussing issues is more important than your conclusion. It is recommended you answer and review no more than two essay questions in any one day.

All Taft University law students are required to take and pass the FYLSX after the conclusion of their first year of study. All first year course work and final examinations must be successfully completed before a student may sit for the FYLSX. The FYLSX is a one-day examination consisting of four essay-style questions in a four hour time period. After a one and one-half hour lunch break, students will be given three hours to answer 100 multiple choice questions. The examination will cover only the subjects of Torts, Contracts, and Criminal Law.

The FYLSX is given twice a year, in the summer and in the fall. (Normally the last Tuesday in June and the third Tuesday in October in both the Los Angeles and Bay areas.) Students taking this examination at the end of their first year of law study must apply to the CBE no later than two months prior to the date of the FYLSX. Students are encouraged to apply early - there are significant late filing fees imposed by the CBE. Applications can be submitted to the CBE before the completion of first year course work and final examinations.

The California General Bar Examination is traditionally given during a three-day period during the last week of February and July. Applications are generally available online from the Committee of Bar Examiners approximately 5 months before the examination dates. To avoid a large late filing fee, applications must generally be received by the CBE approximately 4 months before the examination dates.
