A guide to the different writing systems of the Star Wars Universe.

High Galactic was the in-universe form of the real-world Latin/Roman alphabet.

Abednedish

Writing system used by Abednedo species. Seen written on resistance pilot Ello Asty's helmet in the Star Wars Episode 7 movie. Similar writing was also seen on Nien Nunb's helmet in the same movie.

Aurebesh

Writing system comprised of 34 letters used to transcribe Galactic Basic Standard, which was the most spoken language in the galaxy.

This alternative numbering system has shown up in media, such as the Star Wars Rebels series, the Solo movie, The Mandalorian series, and the Obi-Wan Kenobi mini-series.

Thought to be older than Aurebesh, but not as ancient as Ur-Kittât. Seen in Jedha City in the movie Rogue One.

Bazeese

Writing system used on planet Ferrix. Used alongside Aurebesh on signage and funerary stones. Seen in the Andor series. Symbols representing the digraphs OO and AA were also created. For AA, a letter A was used with a bigger circle/hole in the A.

Clynese

Writing system made up of curved and straight brush strokes and dots. Seen on the Millennium Falcon's escape pod and on a dataplaque on Dryden Vos' ship in the Solo movie.

Coremaic

Ancient script that was in the sacred Jedi texts of the Rammahgon, as well as Tythonian Mastery Tokens given to Jedi Knights who attained the rank of Jedi Master during the High Republic era.

Written form of Ewokese spoken by the Ewoks. Seen in an episode of the Ewoks tv series.

Futhark

Ancient script of the Naboo. Used by royalty, nobility, the government, and the military. Common folk used another writing system called Futhork. Seen in the movie Star Wars Episode 1.

Used by the Naboo on starship computer monitors and status displays. It was also used on helmets of engineers working for the Royal Naboo Security Forces. Seen in the movie Star Wars Episode 1 and The Mandalorian series.

Written form of the language used by the Geonosians. Seen in the Star Wars Episode 2 movie and an episode of the Star Wars Rebels series.

Written form of the language used by the Jawas. Seen in a comic featured in Star Wars Tales 2.

Mandalorian

Written form of Mando'a, which was spoken by the Mandalorian people. Despite the letters F, X, and Z not existing in Mando'a, they were included in the alphabet for ease of transliterating foreign words.*

Outer Rim Basic

Also known as Huttese, it was a 26-letter writing system transcribing Galactic Basic Standard. Sometimes used in conjunction with Aurebesh. Seen in the Star Wars Episode 1 movie, The Clone Wars series, The Bad Batch series, and The Mandalorian series.

Tionese

Ancient script. Called Old Tionese in Legends, it was eventually replaced by Galactic Basic Standard. The in-universe equivalent to the real-world Greek alphabet. Used in the old Jedi texts, written vertically.

Trade Huttese (Legends/Canon)

A writing system used in the 2002 video game Racer Revenge. It was also used in promotional materials for the 1997 anniversary release of the Original Trilogy. In canon, the writing was seen on a sign in a Max Rebo comic.

Trade Federation Script

A writing system used by the Trade Federation and later the Separatists. Seen in Star Wars: The Clone Wars series, Star Wars Rebels series, and the prequel trilogy movies.

Umbara alphabet

The written form of Umbarese. Consisted of 26 letters and additional symbols for digits and punctuation. Used circle or circle segment shapes with dots, lines, and other internal features. Seen in the series The Clone Wars.

Unidentified ancient script

Seen on the world of Arcana in a nightsister temple. The script was later seen on the planet Seatos and the end credits of the Ahsoka series.

Also known as both the Sith written language and the Old Tongue. Seen in the Star Wars Rebels series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars series, the Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order game, and the Star Wars Episode 9 movie.
