An intergalactic star is a star that is not gravitationally bound to any particular galaxy. They independently float in space. Galactic Cannibalism and violent collisions of the galaxies are widely thought to be the source of intergalactic stars. Quite a few stars from the galaxies flung their way out during the course of violent collisions between galaxies, hence giving rise to intergalactic stars.
