The meaning of truth is reality. Something that isn't true is unreal.
When Pontius Pilate heard Jesus say, "Everyone on the side of truth listens to me," Pilate answered, "What is truth?" In other words, Pilate was questioning whether reality makes any difference. He was telling Jesus, "Your reality is no better than my reality."
It is like a methamphetamine addict hearing that the meth is killing him. The addict will deny he is dying, he just wants his next dose. He doesn't care about reality.
