A Different Approach To Learning Electronics
The normal approach is to give a grounding in DC Circuits, then in AC Circuits, then get into semiconductors. This causes a delay in getting to where the interest is, building useful circuits with integrated circuits and transistors.
Solder and Circuits uses a quick-start approach, starting with transistors and picking up the DC and AC topics as needed. To support this approach, this website gives previews of the rules of transistors and the circuits for amplifiers.
The pursuits of young people result in a decade-by-decade decline of familiarity with electronics and many traditional hobbies. It is now normal for electrical engineering freshmen to have never wired a circuit and never experienced the delight of designing a circuit, building it, and seeing it work. Radio Shack used to be a place to buy parts so you could build circuits, but their product line has fewer parts now. Fry’s retains a good parts line. Solder and Circuits is directed to involving young people in circuit building. This has many benefits and develops interest in math and science courses.
