FAQ

1. How long has the practice director been in this building?

A. He started here in '04. He was in Norwich prior to relocating to Waterford, and chose this building after looking into about 30 other places.

2. Is this building handicap accessible?

A. Yes.

3. If I join on a percentage basis, will I have to deal with productivity pressures like at most clinics?

A. If you've ever read this page, you'll see that we are very different from clinics. We believe the path toward success is from your feeling supported instead of pressured. We therefore do not have any productivity requirements of you.

4. How do you determine the percent I would pay if I join as a licensed or not license eligible provider?

A. We have a formula that determines the percent. It is a combination of the length of your contract, credits earned by you from honoring the contract, if you require extra services that need another person to be hired to help you (e.g., a billing person), and whether or not you qualify for an additional credit from being here long-term. Please also note that the lowest our percent goes is substantially lower than any other practice we're aware of in the state. And, the highest it can go is still much lower than the higher percent practice in the area.

5. Is this practice more on the end of strictly honoring their contract with me, or loosely honoring it?

A. We strictly honor it for you, and ask the same of anyone who joins us.

6. My references are limited and my credit is really bad; may I still join?

A. It depends on how limited and how bad. We carefully select people to join us, especially so since you'd be on the honors system here, paying us a flat-rate or percentage of earning, rather than having us use someone to [hopefully] calculate and disseminate the right amounts. We therefore do expect that anyone who joins has good references and good credit. We have had occasions where exceptional people with fair credit applied, and we were able to make it work. But, to have "really bad" credit and still join would be more challenging to figure out how to make that still work.

7. I live an hour away, but I love your practice. Should I still apply?

A. We had someone for years who was about 40 minutes away (~60 in bad traffic). While we do offer many benefits (see chart of benefits) that other practices do not, and that you have every potential to build up even an out-of-network practice here, more than making up for lost time and gas costs through the commute, please consider this: It is important to determine how you feel about driving back and forth. A one hour drive to us is a two hour round trip. Two or three days per week may be fine, but how would you feel about the beginning where you'll have just a client or two to drive in for? Most people may not be happy with that level of commute until their practice builds. We recommend you apply only if you are certain you would not prefer to first figure out what is possible closer to your home.

8. Is there a private bathroom and use of a waiting room?

A. Yes and yes. You can even keep your cards in both waiting rooms.

9. I need a lot of equipment for my profession. May I bring mine in, or do you supply it? Can I work with your Center part-time, even though I must leave lots of equipment there?

A. Our offices are furnished & ready for most office-using professionals (e.g., psychiatrist, attorney, etc.). We would consider purchasing equipment only if we can be assured that the investment will pay off over the years. This may mean an additional contractual provision amidst a contract of several years. But, generally speaking, if you need special equipment, you'd probably bring your own. Leaving equipment that makes the office mostly just usable for your profession means we can only do it part-time if we can reasonably expect to be able to have another person share the office with you who can use the same equipment and that you'd not mind or be able to work out an arrangement with that other person. Of course, how "part-time" you are can make a difference.

10. Who does the cleaning?

A. Most of us spend several minutes per month taking turns on some shared areas, plus vacuuming our own office as needed. We also have the option to opt out (terms apply). Therefore, you can customize your contract with us in this regard to be whichever way works best for you. Many places have a single policy, but we believe it is best to be flexible to meet the individual's expectation.

11. How's the heating situation?

A. Excellent. Though in the middle of the winter, someone working off-hours (e.g., very early/late, or the weekend) can enter a cold office, it can warm quickly using one or more heaters. On the most frigid winter, one large room was slow to warm. So, we invested in a special heating system valued over a grand just to address their concern. We even have PTAC units in most of our offices for exceptionally fast heating!

12. Is internet available, and what do you do it an outage occurs?

A. Yes, and we pay for especially fast cable internet. If an outage, slow-down, or other issues occur, we are responsive, contacting the ISP to resolve any issue. In the event that there is an area-wide outage/slow-down we'll let you know.

13. On a % or flat-rate contract, what is your lease policy if I were to join and then leave prematurely, wanting to take the clients I obtained while there with me?

A. On the flat-rate contract, there is no non-compete clause, but if someone leaves early, then like many commercial leases they are responsible to continue to pay rent until another tenant is found. Except, so long as a tenant has otherwise honored their contract, they may be eligible to greatly reduce this requirement! As for the % contract, we invest heavily in you, giving referrals to rapidly build your practice (as of Nov. '15, we've averaging several referrals per day!). It would not be feasible to run a practice if, for example, people were to join on the longest contract to pay the lowest %, then leave that year to set up shop nearby after we fill up their schedule. If leaving prematurely, a very reasonable non-complete clause is to be followed, which explains the provisions for taking clients with you. In fact, the practice director's previous experience in agencies was one of learning about not taking any agency clients, built into the employee handbooks. The director did not think this was best for clients, nor balanced between the needs of clients and the needs of the agency, and therefore decided that this philosophy of fairness would be clearly printed into your contract to ensure fairness for all parties (for more details on this and the rest of item 13, please ask during an interview).
